Recipes From Le Manoir Aux Quat' Saisons by Raymond Blanc
Recipes From Le Manoir Aux Quat' Saisons by Raymond Blanc lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Little, Brown & Co., 2000, Paperback.
Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings;
From the cover: "Raymond Blanc has achieved worldwide fame as an inspired chef with a relentless drive for perfection. His cooking has been described in The Good Food Guide as 'an extraordinary process of creativity, passion, subtlety, indeed genius'. Born in Besangon, in eastern France, he grew up among a family of food lovers who took great pride in the quality of their cuisine and their home-grown ingredients. Although deeply influenced by their ideas, he is entirely self-taught and has never revealed the secrets of his cuisine. But here at last he explains his uniquely successful methods and shares some of the very special recipes from his Oxfordshire restaurant, Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons. M. Blanc's reputation is such that even before it opened, in 1984, Le Manoir was awarded two Michelin stars.
In keeping with Raymond Blanc's insistence on fresh produce, the emphasis in this book is on seasonal variety, with thirty to forty recipes for each season. For Spring there is an elegant chartreuse of asparagus spears and leeks; raspberry sorbet is one of the refreshing Summer desserts; Autumn richness is celebrated with roast snipe in a sauce of old Madeira and walnuts and for Winter there is a warming mussel soup. The recipes are accompanied by menu suggestions, wine recommendations and chef's notes on how to achieve professional results. "
Introduction by: Egon Ronay & Hugh Johnson
Very Good. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers. Text complete, clean and tight.

Managing People At Work by John W. Hunt
Managing People At Work by John W. Hunt lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
McGraw-Hill, 1979, Hardback in dust wrapper.
From the cover: "Here, at last, is a brief, lucid analysis for managers of where the behavioural sciences have taken us over the last 30 years a fresh and practical approach to a subject that academics have often made difficult to follow.
John Hunt presents in a readable form ideas on the major subject areas of organizational behaviour: motivation, perception, communication, groups, roles, power, organizations, structures, managers, leaders, participation, and change.
The author's objective is to let managers decide for themselves whether behavioural tools can be useful and valuable to them. He has distilled from a vast literature on the subject those theories and models which have endured because they seemed to be useful to managers.
The problems managers face are very similar around the world, but behavioural scientists have confused rather than clarified matters by thrusting a multitude of theories and models of work on them. Each theorist offers a new solution to the age-old problems. Managers have been inundated with theories, fads, and speculations and, not surprisingly, have come to regard the social sciences with suspicion and scepticism. This book presents only those that have survived, that have empirical support, and that the author has found of use to managers in solving their problems."

The Fortune Teller by Donald James
The Fortune Teller by Donald James lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Century, 1999, Hardback in dust wrapper.
From the cover: "The Arctic city of Murmansk, capital of the Kola region of north Russia, early in the new century. Inspector Constantin Vadim is back in his home town after a brief and nearly catastrophic appointment in Moscow.
But now he is faced with a frightening personal challenge: one night his young wife, Natalya, a doctor, answers an emergency medical call twelve hours later she still hasn't come back. An accident seems the first possibility or even a lover. Yet soon a more terrifying answer begins to emerge as Vadim's desperate investigation reveals that a second missing woman, an American consular official, was abducted on the same night.
Frustrated by the strange twists and contradictions in the case, Vadim surrenders to the dark power of Russian myth and prophecy. But he is linked in uneasy partnership with a black FBI woman, seconded from Moscow. Locked in a clash of cultures, the ill-balanced pair must confront an abductor who is at once deviously clever and bafflingly deranged."

Michael Joseph: Master of Words by Richard Joseph
Michael Joseph: Master of Words by Richard Joseph lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Ashford Press, 1986, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Genealogical Tables to the endpapers and blanks;
From the cover: "Master of Words is the long overdue biography of Michael Joseph, the gifted literary agent and author who founded the now famous firm of publishers and who did so much to revolutionise the world of publishing.
Written by Michael's son Richard, this book is the result of two years of painstaking research. By sifting through trunks of old letters, piles of press cuttings and an attic bursting with literary riches, Richard began finally to gain the complete picture of his fascinating and multi-talented father.
Born in 1897 "MJ" left school at 16 to join the army and subsequently serve in both World Wars. He worked as a highly-respected journalist between the wars, but was destined to reach the height of his career as he began work as a literary agent with Curtis Brown.
It was here that his startling ability to recognise and develop new literary talent made Michael Joseph very much the new doyen of the publishing world.
He soon left Curtis Brown to start his own publishing house, which grew into the hugely successful Michael Joseph Ltd. of today.
Some of the many famous authors that MJ befriended and encouraged are Michael Arlen, Stacy Aumomer, H. E. Bates, Monica Dickens, Paul Gallico, Daphne du Maurier, C. S. Forester and Richard Llewelyn. Later authors include Miss Read (Dora Saint), Dick Francis (who rode for him) and the late Duchess of Windsor, whose biography title he acquired, against stiff opposition, as a result of his earlier meetings with Edward VIII. The list is endless with the result that today many authors owe their fame to his efforts.
MJ was also a prolific writer and journalist with some 17 books to his name, some of which became bestsellers in their own right. His famous cat books were tremendously popular particularly Charles The Story of Friendship, and Best Cat Stories.
He also wrote a highly successful series on journalism and creative writing; Journalism for Profit and The Commercial Side of Literature featured on bestseller lists on both sides of the Atlantic.
MJ's quite considerable prowess as an author has long been overshadowed by his publishing successes but it is perhaps this which MJ himself would most like to be remembered for.
His personal life was as varied as his career; he was of course
destined to mix in a social circle that many can only dream of, and the anecdotes of so many notable personalities make this biography sparkle with humour and life. Cats were MJ's private passion and his Siamese cat, Charles, features in many of his photographs and portraits and was his constant companion. His cats, race-horses and myriad famous and eccentric friends mix in and out of his absorbing life. MJ was married three times -firstly to Hermione Gingold, then to Edna, who died so tragically and finally to Anthea, who became the strength behind the company after his death in 1958.
Master of Words is an affectionate and nostalgic look at a highly-respected and intriguing man; it is also a brilliant evocation of the style and atmosphere of Britain through the first half of this century."

The Killer's Game by Jay R. Bonansinga
The Killer's Game by Jay R. Bonansinga lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Macmillan, 1997, Hardback in dust wrapper.
From the cover: "A cold current of dread flowed though him. The world was a video game now, full of pop-up menace and surprise ambushes. Anyone he came across might be out to kill him
Veteran hit-man Joe Mood has been informed he has a terminal illness and decides to end it all by putting out an open contract on himself via the internet. The bounty will be S6 million drawn from his Swiss bank account: an offer to every professional assassin, terrorist, mob enforcer, KGB cutthroat and random homicidal scumbag crawling the planet. And most would covet the honour of bagging the legendary 'slugger'. The contest starts at midnight.
As Joe settle down to wait for his own deadline, he notices his answer phone is winking with a message. It seems the clinic has made a terrible misdiagnosis. Joe could live for many years. Suddenly he is desperate to survive but already predatory footsteps are advancing along the corridor. All Joe can do is flee. Out the window. Down the alley. Into a terrifying roller-coaster of violence and destruction.
Meanwhile the lethal bounty hunters are converging on Chicago. The Looker, the Cajun, the Sabatini twins, the Hodu warrior All the kids are coming out to play, and they'll even kill each other to get to Joe first. As he continues his desperate flight into the heart of darkness, the cops and the Feds join in the chase. Last of all comes Joe's girlfriend Maizie, determined to save the man she loves.
And, as a crescendo of mayhem explodes around him, perhaps the only thing standing between Joe and perdition is the love of a good woman."

English Countryside Embroidery: A Treasury of Over 50 Exclusive Needlepoint Designs by Stafford Whiteaker
English Countryside Embroidery: A Treasury of Over 50 Exclusive Needlepoint Designs by Stafford Whiteaker lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Bracken Books, 1988, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Jacket illustration: Kittens by Percy Tarrant (1881-1930). Illustrated by way of: Colour Drawings; Patterns;
From the cover: "Following the success of his highly acclaimed English Garden Embroidery, Stafford Whiteaker has now gone further afield in his search for fresh inspiration for his original needlepoint designs.
He has found it in the English countryside that idyllic place of all our dreams. Old-fashioned flowers in the traditional cottage garden like pretty pinks, fat cabbage roses and tiny violas were the first to catch his attention. Beyond the garden gate he sought out the wild flowers, fragrant honeysuckle, dog roses and red berries of the country lanes. The rich harvests of farm fields also inspired new ideas for needlepoint patterns.
The accompanying text, with its tales, songs and poems of country life, has a delightful informality that emphasizes the role of needlepoint as a source of relaxing pleasure and practical entertainment. Stafford Whiteaker underlines this message of enjoyment by basing some designs on the pursuits of a Victorian afternoon in the country. Here are found embroidery repeats of Victorian jewels, coloured garlands, fish swimming in a garden pond, fancy patterns of marbled papers and the mythical creatures of heraldry.
Alongside this treasury of patterns, the practicalities of needlepoint are not forgotten. There is a chart of essential stitches, with two new exciting ones to try, and a section about canvas with advice on colour and working with yarns. Background colours and patterns are also discussed with 20 hints to make your needlepoint work more enjoyable. A variety of stitched-up projects from cushions and firescreens to chairs and footstools are shown in full-colour photographs.
Like its predecessor, English Countryside Embroidery is beautifully illustrated with paintings of scenes that recall the charm of the countryside in Queen Victoria's day. They accompany an introduction in which the author talks about the English countryside of yesterday and today that rural place just outside the garden gate where wild flowers bloom, cottages nest among honeysuckle and roses, and gentle peace is to be found away from the rush of city life. For centuries this countryside has inspired the themes and motifs of the English embroiderer and Stafford Whiteaker adds a contemporary voice to that tradition for another generation of needleworkers."

The Oxford Book Of American Verse by F. O. Matthiessen
The Oxford Book Of American Verse by F. O. Matthiessen lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Oxford University Press, 1950, Hardback in dust wrapper.
From the cover: "A worthy companion to The Oxford Rook of English Verse, this completely new anthology covers, in 571 selections, the whole range of American poetry from colonial times to the present; more than half of it is devoted to the best work of the last fifty years.
Fifty-one poets are represented deliberately fewer than in most anthologies, so that sufficient space can be devoted to each poet to afford a real understanding of his work. More recent and less well-known poets are represented wherever possible by works of some length rather than by a scattering of short poems.
Brief bibliographical notes at the end enable the reader to know in what volume of the poet's work each poem originally appeared. Mr. Matthiessen contributed a long critical introduction."
Very Good in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper edgeworn with some short, untidy tears, and a little scuffed. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.

The Small Woman by Alan Burgess
The Small Woman by Alan Burgess lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Evans Brothers, 1959, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps to the endpapers and blanks; Portrait to the frontispiece;
From the cover: "In this remarkable book, Alan Burgess tells the story of Gladys Aylward, known in China as The Small Woman. Small she is, being barely five feet in height, but great in heart and courage.
Twenty-five years ago, Gladys Aylward was a parlour maid in London, certain in her mind that her life work was to serve God as a missionary in China. After years of saving and struggle she set off for China by the overland route with a single ticket, a few shillings in cash and some tinned food for the journey. She survived many difficulties and at last reached her goal, a one-woman missionary outpost in the Southern Shansi district.
In her efforts to reach the heart of the peasant Chinese she started the Inn of Eight Happinesses and became Foot Inspector to the Mandarin of Yang Cheng. Single-handed, she quelled a mutiny in a prison and converted the Mandarin to Christianity.
Then came the Japanese, to bomb, ravage and kill. The Small Woman, after being battered by Japanese rifle butts, collected one hundred homeless Chinese children and led them on a terrible twelve-day march over the mountains to the Yellow River, only to find that crossing was forbidden. Again she prevailed and brought her flock from one refugee camp to another to the final haven of Fufeng, where the Nationalist Relief Organisation took charge of the children. Desperately ill after endless hardships, she partly regained her health and returned to England after twenty years' absence, years of ceaseless missionary work under appalling conditions.
After lecturing and preaching in churches, schools and mission halls in England Gladys Aylward left for Hong-Kong and Formosa, where she is now continuing her missionary work and re-visiting some of the children whom she rescued.

Evans Brothers, 1959, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps to the endpapers and blanks; Portrait to the frontispiece;

The Agony & the Ecstasy: Stephen Roche's World of Cycling by Stephen Roche with David Walsh
The Agony & the Ecstasy: Stephen Roche's World of Cycling by Stephen Roche with David Walsh lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Stanley Paul, 1988, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Jacket illustration: Stephen Roche during the 1987 Tour de France. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;
From the cover: "On the morning after Stephen Roche became cycling champion of the world, a French newspaper wrote: We sought a successor to Bernard Hinault but, instead, we found a new Eddy Merckx. In winning the Giro d'ltalia, Tour de France and World Championship in 1987, Roche entered the Merckx class as only the second cyclist to win the sport's three great prizes in the same season. The achievement will ensure a permanent place for Roche in cycling's heroic history but what the history books will not record are the struggles, conflicts, sufferings and satisfaction that lay behind the dedicated Irishman's great victories.
The Agony & the Ecstasy is the story of the making of a champion, from his boyhood on the Dublin streets where his passion for cycling was born and fostered by his father, through the gruelling years of trying to prove he had the talent everyone said he had. The book follows Roche's growth from home-town Dublin boy into a young European, famous in every city where cycling is a major sport, and the astonishing series of wins in 1987 that were to make him a sporting legend. The Agony & the Ecstasy takes us behind the scenes of triumph and into the mysterious world of cycling to show us what life for top professionals is really like: the roads, the races and the riders themselves how they live and train; the battles with the elements on the great marathons; the crowds and their role in morale; the dangers of the sport, and the elation or despair when the finish line is reached.
Stephen Roche, one of the most likeable world champions in any sport, is articulate, perceptive and often controversial. Together with journalist David Walsh he has produced a fascinating, thought-provoking book about his own route to the summit, and an illuminating in-depth study of his sport."
Very Good in Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper heavily tanned at the join of the rear panel. Leans slightly. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight.
Blue boards with Silver titling to the Spine. 213 pages. Index. 9½" x 6¼".

Great Railway Journeys of the World: An Encyclopedia of the World's Best Locomotive Journeys by Max Wade-Matthews
Great Railway Journeys of the World: An Encyclopedia of the World's Best Locomotive Journeys by Max Wade-Matthews lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Lorenz, 1998, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;
From the cover: "There are few finer experiences than the thrill of a classic railway journey. This remains as true today as it was in 1825, when Stephenson's Rocket first steamed its way from Stockton to Darlington.
Great Railway Journeys of the World describes 95 outstanding railway journeys, experienced first-hand by a team of expert writers. Some of the journeys are quite short but steeped in history, notably the railway down India's once perilous Khyber Pass; and the narrow-gauge line that carried gold prospectors from the port of Skagway to Whitehorse, in the Yukon. Others, such as the transcontinental lines of Australia and Canada, the Hastern and Oriental Express from Singapore to Bangkok, and the Red Arrow's journey from Brussels to I long Kong, cover thousands of kilometres.
For luxury and romance there is nothing to match the Orient Express, the Blue Train from Cape Town to Pretoria, or the wonderfully nostalgic "Palace on Wheels" in Rajasthan; while the many extraordinary feats of engineering described include the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Vladivostock, the Trans-Ancline Railway in Chile with its 26 tunnels in 70 km (44 miles), and the Bra/. ilian line from Santos where the carriages are still hoisted up the Serro do Mar on a rope. For lovers of the latest and fastest trains, there is the high-speed line from Tokyo to Osaka, or London to Bern by Furostar and TGV while on many other journeys the trains are still hauled, on gauges broad and narrow, by lovingly preserved steam locomotives.
Long or short, modern or historic, broad-gauge or narrow, each of the journeys described in Great Railway Journeys of the World will whet the appetites of rail enthusiasts everywhere. Packed with information historical, geographical and technical and with over 700 photographs of the world's most remarkable trains, and stunning scenery, this monumental book bears eloquent witness to the enduring romance of rail travel."

New Europe by Michael Palin
New Europe by Michael Palin lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2007, Hardback in dust wrapper.
A Later Printing. Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Maps [1]; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;
From the cover: "Michael Palin's New Europe starts with a simple idea: that only a couple of hours from home is a half of Europe that is for him as unknown and unexplored as the plateau of Tibet or the vastnesses of the Sahara. Cut off for most of his life by Cold Wars and Iron Curtains, Europe's eastern lands are now open for business.
And it's as much a voyage of discovery as any of Michael's other journeys, as he finds himself in countries he'd barely heard of, many of them new names on the map, many unfamiliar and mysterious, all with tragic histories and much brighter futures.
Starting in the snows of the Julian Alps, on the borders of Italy and Slovenia, Michael heads east to discover the half of Europe he never knew.
Heading down the ancient trade route of the Adriatic coast he turns north into the Balkans, gingerly picking themselves up after the vicious fighting of the 1990s. Albania takes Michael into a different world of strongly eastern influence which he follows through Bulgaria, Macedonia and into Turkey, where Europe and Asia meet. Turning north to Moldova and Romania, he follows the mighty Danube into Serbia and Hungary, the very heart of Europe, and on to the Ukraine. A final sweep from north to south takes him through the Baltic States into Poland and across the Carpathian Mountains into Slovakia, the Czech Republic and what was until recently East Germany.
Visiting twenty countries, more than in his Himalaya and Sahara journeys combined, he encounters painful memories and exuberant celebrations. Throwing himself into local life with his usual reckless curiosity, he samples pig fat with a brandy chaser, meets Romanian lumberjacks, drives the 8. 58 stopping train from Poznan to Wolsztyn, learns about mine-clearing in Bosnia, treads the catwalk at a Budapest fashion show and watches Turkish gents wrestling in olive oil.
It's New Europe, but vintage Palin."
Very Good in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Price Clipped.
Blue boards with Silver titling to the Spine. 288 pages. 10¾" x 7¾".

The Silent Revolution: The Development of Conventional Weapons 1945-85 by Guy Hartcup
The Silent Revolution: The Development of Conventional Weapons 1945-85 by Guy Hartcup lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Brassey's, 1993, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;
From the cover: "The awful threat of nuclear war has tended to blind people to the great advances in conventional weapons technology that occurred in the latter half of the twentieth century. These were years of unprecedented investment in research and development, and despite the cost, of unparalleled scientific advancement. The Silent Revolution is the first book to chart the worldwide development of the whole spectrum of modern weapons systems since the closing years of the Second World War.
Guy Hartcup's comprehensive study covers the many new weapon systems ranging from guided missiles to chemical weapons that have revolutionised air, land and sea warfare, and equally important, the scientific applications including electronics, communications and sensors, as well as the ability of the fighting man to handle new equipment. As a former official historian to the UK Air Ministry and the Treasury, he draws extensively upon official documents now released under the thirty year rule and upon the mass of unclassified material in the public domain covering more recent developments on both sides of the Atlantic. He has produced a unique study in which not only the weapons systems and their technology are examined but also the internecine strife between the services, each competing for a bigger share of the defence budget, and the impact of this and countless political cancellations on new projects.
The book ends on a timely warning against the dangers of succumbing to what the author calls 'technophilia', reminding us that, despite the widespread use of new technological wonders in the Gulf War, much of the weaponry used was based on technology going back tens of years."

Watercolour Challenge by Diana Vowles
Watercolour Challenge by Diana Vowles lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Channel 4, 1999, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Colour Drawings;
From the cover: "Watercolour Challenge is the highly successful Channel 4 series in which actress Hannah Gordon and her team of experts set out on the road to meet hundreds of budding artists. Their destinations are in all four corners of the British Isles, from Armagh in Northern Ireland to Goudhurst in Kent, and the subjects range from rugged coastlines and ancient abbeys to a tramway museum and a kite festival.
Each artist in the competition is required to paint a scene in four hours. For some this is a terrible rush; for others it is just too long. All have their own distinctive style some representational, some expressionist, some abstract and with such a range of subjects, Diana Vowles has the opportunity to discuss different aspects of watercolour as she meets so many painters.
Watercolour Challenge aims to inspire other would-be artists to pick up their paintbrushes. But Watercolour Challenge is more than simply inspirational, this book is an accessible, practical guide to watercolour painting, including guidance on how to get started, descriptions of the major techniques, hints and tips from the Watercolour Challenge experts and detailed descriptions of the styles and techniques employed by the competitors.
Watercolour Challenge is beautifully illustrated with Brian Rybolt's photographs of the locations, the artists and their work as it progresses."
Introduction by: Hannah Gordon

Natural Collage: The Making of Pictures with Seeds, Leaves and Grasses by Sally Miles
Natural Collage: The Making of Pictures with Seeds, Leaves and Grasses by Sally Miles lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Lutterworth Press, 1973, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs [19]; Colour Plates [12]; Black & White Drawings [30];
From the cover: "Sally Miles created her first picture quite by chance. She had glycerined some willow leaves and spread them out to dry; glancing at them, she was struck by their lively flourishing look like a bird's tail-feathers. And that was what they became, for with those leaves and some silvery honesty discs she created a small gay bird, later mounted on black velvet and set in a junk-yard frame. She has had offer after offer for that picture, but could not bring herself to sell it; it marked the beginning of her craft.
There have been many pictures since then sold, given away, specially commissioned. Some are heraldic, with formal emblematic designs; some realistic portraiture; some abstract open-work patterns; some created in minute detail, each tiny seed used like a stitch in a superb medieval cope; some small, like the miniatures set in locket frames; some vast, like the display panels for a London store.
From two-dimensional work, she moved into three-, being invited by the Dean and Chapter of St Paul's Cathedral, London, to create a Christmas Crib, its figures larger than life-size, a heavenly host of angels hovering above, all in natural materials leaves, grasses, reeds, seeds, seed-pods.
This book describes how to collect and preserve and store your materials, how to sketch your initial designs, how to create and mount and frame your pictures. It is full of delight in the natural world: the intricate designs and subtle colours of seed-heads dried by sun and wind, of tiny stripy seeds, of brittle elegant stalks, of autumn leaves and marshland grasses. The only limit is that set by one's own imagination: the materials, renewed every year, always unique, cost nothing; it isn't even necessary to be able to draw; all you need is the desire to try."
Very Good in Good Dust Wrapper. Small puncture, untidy, to the slightly faded spine of the dust wrapper. Text complete, clean and tight.
Brown boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 127 pages. Index. 10¼" x 8¼".

Behind the Scenes: Domestic Arrangements in Historic Houses by Christina Hardyment
Behind the Scenes: Domestic Arrangements in Historic Houses by Christina Hardyment lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
The National Trust, 1997, Hardback in dust wrapper.
First in this edition. [First: Penguin, 1992] Jacket illustration: Detail of the nineteenth-century bell-pull system in the Servants' Passage at Erddig, Clwyd. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Plans;
From the cover: "No man need ever have an ill-provisioned house if there be but attached to it a dovecot, a warren and a fishpond, wrote Olivier de Serres in 1603.
In today's world, with the supermarket down the street and a host of modern domestic appliances in the kitchen, it has never been easier to feed, bathe, and pamper ourselves and never harder to imagine how our ancestors managed to run a household in the days before gas, electricity, central heating, and running water. How did they cook meals, bake bread, and launder clothes? And how did they keep their houses clean?
To answer these and other questions, Christina Hardyment conducted a fascinating quest into the history of housekeeping through the well-preserved properties of Britain's National Trust, among them Petworth, Uppark, Shugborough, and Lanhydrock. To reconstruct the ingenious methods used by earlier generations to make a house a home and to keep themselves warm and well-fed, she squirmed through drains, poked around sculleries and cellars, and clambered into icehouses and up chimneys. The result of her explorations is an informative, amusing text that recounts not only the history of the kitchen, the bathroom, and the laundry, but also investigates bakehouses and breweries, dairies and dovecotes, the lamp room and the larder.
Accompanying Hardyment's descriptions of what she found in great mansions, humble cottages, medieval castles and Victorian town-houses are archival documents and accounts and a wealth of color photographs, many taken especially for this book. Together, text and illustrations reveal the domestic world of days gone by in extraordinarily intimate, often touching, and even surprising detail."

Cricket from the Grandstand by Keith Miller
Cricket from the Grandstand by Keith Miller lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Oldbourne, 1959, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;
From the cover: "Keith Miller, the great all-rounder, after an unprecedented career in first-class cricket, is in the grandstand. Always unpredictable, this is the man who would bowl a leg-break with the new ball or hit sixes when his side was pottering to a draw. He retired at a time when he was at the peak of his ability.
Even though he now watches from the grandstand, he is still the same Keith Miller. His opinions are open and hard-hitting, but as honest as they arc outspoken.
Why did he quit cricket in his prime? Here is the answer and there can be little doubt as to what Miller means by his remarks. He castigates gamesmanship suggesting that Trevor Bailey should be fined a run for every minute he wastes. He focuses a critical spotlight on his friends Bill Edrich and Denis Compton, and has much to say about the legend of the Middlesex twins.
He says, frankly: The fate of English County cricket is of common interest to all cricket-playing nations. And I don't like the way English County cricket is ticking over.
He tackles the Wardle affair, the position of Peter May, snobbishness in cricket, shamateurism, and many other topics. But even at his most controversial his ideas arc all directed to one target: the betterment of the game he loves so well.
To round off this new book he has provided his own highly personal account of the Test matches played during 1958-9, when England surrendered the Ashes. He brings the games, day by day, to life on the page and says precisely what he thinks on such matters as umpiring, doubtful catches and the chuckers union. Raciness, hard-hitting, controversy these are the qualities we expect from Keith Miller. Here we get them in full measure in a grand book."
Very Good in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper which is a little faded. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Pages lightly age-tanned.
Blue boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 165 pages. 8¾" x 5¾".

The Voyage of the Mir-El-Lah by Lorenzo Ricciardi
The Voyage of the Mir-El-Lah by Lorenzo Ricciardi lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Collins, 1980, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Diagrams [2]; Maps [2];
From the cover: "Lorenzo Ricciardi tells with panache the story of his dream of sailing in a dhow, of how his dream came true and of his voyage from the head of the Arabian Gulf to the coast of East Africa. He travelled in the company of his photographer wife, Mirella. Her spectacular photographs and his text are a record of a rapidly disappearing world, the world of the dhows.
Since childhood when he ran away from his home, Lorenzo Ricciardi has been an incurable romantic. The overriding passion of his life has been the sea: as a small boy he watched the fishing vessels in the harbour in Genoa but later in his life it was the dhows he gazed at in Mombasa harbour which really caught his imagination. Lorenzo Ricciardi had a dream: he would acquire a dhow, the mysterious craft with lateen sails, as old as Solomon, and would sail on the ancient route down the Arabian Gulf to the coast of East Africa. With the backing of a film company and a reckless night in a Swiss casino he managed to get enough money to purchase the vessel of his dream and finally to set sail.
The story of the journey of the dhow, the Mir-El-Lah, with her quixotic nakhoda (captain) is told in this remarkable book. With his wife, Mirella, and their crew, this intrepid traveller sailed from the Shatt Al Arab on the Iran/Iraq border to East Africa on the classic monsoon route which Arab sailors have travelled for thousands of years. Political turmoil, shark spearing, earthquakes, erupting volcanoes and cyclones all form part of the saga, as does the unwelcome intrusion of the Iranian secret police (Savak), Yemeni guerrillas and Somali commissars The crew was motley, and his wife Mirella, renowned photographer and author of Vanishing Africa, contributed the pictures for this story. It is the tale of a modern Sinbad, the tale of a man whose dream came true."
Very Good in Good+ Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper, pulled slightly at the head of the upper panel. Price Clipped. Text complete, clean and tight.
Blue boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 256 pages. Index. 9¾" x 7".

Castles from the Air: An Aerial Portrait of Britain's Finest Castles by Paul Johnson lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.
Bloomsbury, 2006, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Contains a glossary. Contains a glossary of terms. Jacket illustration: Ludlow Castle, Shropshire. Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;
From the cover: "The castles of Britain are icons of history. They were built to mark the domains of the powerful, and stood as symbols of authority. Their structures reflect the highest technology of the day solid against battering rams, siege and cannon fire. And their locations identify the prevailing understanding of how the lie of the land could be turned to advantage. But imposing as the view from the ground can be, nothing shows their form and purpose better than the view from above.
Castles from the Air traces the origin and evolution of British castles from their Norman and earlier beginnings, through the great age of castle building in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries to the slow decline of castles as an architectural form in the fifteenth century. Through the Civil War in the seventeenth century, and the Napoleonic wars at the turn of the nineteenth century, although no longer the imposing bulwarks of earlier times, castles continued their important defensive role.
In Castles from the Air, hundreds of years of history are captured at a glance in more than 150 photographs of outstanding quality, revealing the past in a new and illuminating way. No better, nor more beautiful portrait of the castles of England, Scotland and Wales has ever been published before."
Very Good in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper faded at the top edge with a little rubbing to the edges. Small gift sticker covering the price. Text complete, clean and tight otherwise.
Green boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 216 pages. Index. 14" x 10½".
