Footprints in Cyprus: An Illustrated History by Sir David Hunt

Footprints in Cyprus: An Illustrated History by Sir David Hunt newly listed for sale on the fantastic BookLovers of Bath web site!Trigraph, 1990, Hardback in dust wrapper.

2nd (revised) edition, 1st printing, [First Published: 1982] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Maps; Plans; Contributors: J. N. Coldstream; Sir David Hunt; Dr V. Karageorghis; Dr D. Michaelides; Dr E. J. Peltenburg; Sir Steven Runciman; Dr V. A. Tatton-Brown;

From the cover: "The history of Cyprus begins in the Stone Age with one of the most extraordinary village settlements ever excavated from a period nearly 9,000 years ago. From the time the first Greeks arrived, over 3,000 years ago, the island has been the centre of a vigorous and creative artistic culture. Many treasures survive from the 1st millennium before Christ which illustrate vividly the fact that Cyprus can rival in achievement the best art in the Mediterranean world.

In Footprints in Cyprus these achievements are not only fully depicted in colour and in black and white but also related to their historical context. The text is contributed by the leading authorities of today and embodies the results of the latest research.

In the next great age of Greek culture, the Byzantine period, the particular contribution of Cyprus is to be found in the churches whose mural paintings are more numerous and better preserved than in any comparable area. Its history also is strikingly different from that of other parts of the Byzantine Empire; it is lucidly expounded by the leading British historian of the period, Sir Steven Runciman.

For three and a half centuries foreigners from Western Europe ruled in Nicosia, for most of the period a French royal family from Poitou. This is the romantic period, when the great castles were built, high up in the mountains or dominating the sea-ports, and Gothic cathedrals rose to add a new exotic note to the cultural milieu of the eastern Mediterranean. The history of the kings of Cyprus is as romantic as their architecture. Then came the Venetians, who ruled for eighty-two years until with the sieges of Nicosia and Famagusta the last outpost of Christianity in the Levant fell to the conquering Turks. The poignant drama of these two sieges is illustrated here with many contemporary pictures and drawings.

During the Turkish period Cyprus was a backwater but it came back into the mainstream of European history when in the last quarter of the 19th century authority passed from the Turks to the British. The Colonial years are illustrated from contemporary sources; the text pays particular attention to the factors of international policies which determined the island's history.

Independent since 1960 Cyprus suffered invasion in 1974. The history of independence and invasion is traced by the editor on the basis of his experience in the British Diplomatic Service."

4th printing. [First Published: 1989]

From the cover: "Total Quality Management is a new approach to improving the effectiveness and flexibility of business as a whole. It is a quality process which involves every person in every department of an organization working together to eliminate errors and prevent waste. The book explains, with practical examples where possible: the basic concepts of TQM; how to set down a quality policy; the organizational requirements; the role of the quality manager; the measurement of quality costs; the TQM tools (including flow charting, Pareto, cause and effect analysis and brainstorming); quality planning; reliability and maintenance; design control and the 'seven new tools' of quality function deployment (QFD); how to set up quality systems to international standards; the role of computers in the quality information system; the techniques of statistical process control (SPC) and its implementation (including SPC in non-manufacturing); the setting up of quality teams and circles; the programmes required for training; and gives a detailed guide on how to implement the continuous improvement philosophies. Some guidance is also provided regarding the long-term survival of TQM in an organization and how to avoid the dangers that TQM can bring.

Directors and managers in diverse organizations will be able to develop TQM within their own operations after reading this book. Students on business or management studies courses and those following engineering, science and quality assurance courses will find this a stimulating introduction to a new management tool."

Mechanics by W. Chester

Mechanics by W. Chester newly listed for sale on the fantastic BookLovers of Bath web site!George Allen & Unwin, 1979, Paperback.

First in this, paperback, edition.

From the cover: "This is a major new introduction to mechanics as studied in pre-specialist undergraduate courses in applied mathematics. The mathematics has been kept as simple as possible on the assumption that the reader will have little background in the subject; no advanced techniques are used and there are no complicated applications.

The book offers an outstandingly clear and comprehensive coverage of the conventional topics of mechanics and non-linear problems are also introduced in the belief that they involve important and widely applicable techniques which are appropriate at the elementary level. Rigid-body mechanics is covered in a three-dimensional treatment which brings the student directly to a better understanding of the subject than would the two-dimensional approach conventionally adopted at this level. This involves an understanding of angular vectors, which is inevitable in any case, and brings the student to the more interesting applications of rigid-body mechanics, which are more often than not three-dimensional. The arguably important topic of tensor calculus has been omitted in order to keep the mathematics simple and because it is not essential as part of mechanics at this level.

Chapter 1 gives a full treatment of elementary vector theory, consistent with the current status of the subject in most schemes of study. The mechanics of a particle is introduced in Chapters 2-8 and the ground is then prepared for three-dimensional rigid-body mechanics by a discussion of angular vectors and the theory of moments. The derivation of equations of motion is thereby readily achieved and is discussed in Chapter 11. The bulk of this chapter is devoted to worked examples in two and three dimensions in order to allow the student to build up an understanding of the applications of the equations of motion without becoming confused. Chapter 12 deals with virtual work and Lagrange's equations, and the final chapter introduces some important techniques used in non-linear mechanics and elsewhere.

Illustrative examples and exercises are provided in abundance in view of the importance of working through examples in this particular subject. Over 130 diagrams complement the text.

The book should be of serious interest to applied mathematicians, engineers and theoretical physicists as a clear and comprehensive introduction to a major part of their undergraduate studies."

Big Bang: The Most Important Scientific Discovery of All Time and Why You Need to Know About It by Simon Singh

Big Bang: The Most Important Scientific Discovery of All Time and Why You Need to Know About It by Simon Singh newly listed for sale on the fantastic BookLovers of Bath web site!Fourth Estate, 2004, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: "Simon Sing, the bestselling author of Fermafs Last Theorem and The Code Book, brings us nothing less than the story of the Big Bang.

Albert Einstein once said: The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible. Simon Singh believes geniuses like Einstein are not the only people able to grasp the physics that underlies the universe. We all can. As well as explaining what the Big Bang theory actually is, the book addresses why cosmologists believe that it is an accurate description of the origin of the universe. It also tells the story of the brilliant and eccentric scientists who fought against the establishment idea of an eternal and unchanging cosmos.

Simon Singh, renowned for making difficult ideas much less difficult than they seem, is the perfect guide on this journey. Everybody has heard of the Big Bang theory, but how many of us can actually claim to understand it? With characteristic clarity and a narrative peppered with anecdotes and personal histories of those who have struggled to understand creation, Simon Singh has written the story of the most important theory ever."

Tarantulas, Marmosets and Other Stories: An Amazon Diary by Nick Gordon

Tarantulas, Marmosets and Other Stories: An Amazon Diary by Nick Gordon newly listed for sale on the fantastic BookLovers of Bath web site!Metro, 1997, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Maps [1];

From the cover: "Tarantulas, Marmosets and Other Stories: An Amazon Diary tells of what really is involved at the cutting edge of wildlife filming.

For almost a decade, wildlife explorer and award-winning photographer Nick Gordon has lived in the Amazon basin, capturing the dazzling array of rare species that make their home in and around the rainforest: the giant eight-eyed tarantulas which live in a network of underground burrows on the forest floor, the jaguars stalking freshwater turtles in the shallows and the marmosets living in the jungle.

But wildlife photography is rarely simple, and, in his inspirational account, Nick tells of the amazing moments that he and his crew experience as they go in search of the perfect shot — from narrowly missing a military coup to dreaming of eating a crunchy onion ring — only to find it was a crunchy cockroach instead!; from fleeing for their lives from hostile tribes to swimming with wild otters — not to mention anacondas. He tells, too, of the precarious process of gaining acceptance among the rarely-contacted indigenous tribes (Piaroa Indians) — with bizarre initiation rituals ranging from mind-blowing 'yoppo' ceremonies to eating roast tarantula in a Piaroa death cavern.

Powerful and compelling, this is a book which depicts the Amazon in all its fascinating, vibrant and occasionally macabre detail."
