English Love Poems by Edited by John Betjeman & Geoffrey Taylor hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
Faber & Faber, 1957, Hardback in dust wrapper.
From the cover: "When they are in love people turn to poetry, seeking to find there a definition of what they themselves cannot express in words. Like no other art, poetry can crystallize, by using the right words in the right order, those thoughts and emotions which love provokes. Of love in all its moods this anthology is a reflection love as it has been experienced by English poets and made the subject-matter of English poetry, It has been compiled, to quote from the introduction, 'by two married men in their middle years. Each thinks he knows the joy of love fulfilled and the sorrows of love unrequited'. One of them is the late Geoffrey Taylor, whose premature and tragic death in 19^6 was a most grievous loss to English letters. The other is Mr. John Betjeman. There is no need, therefore, to expatiate on the care and discrimination with which the choice has been made. English Love Poems is a delight."

A Sleep Of Prisoners by Christopher Fry
A Sleep Of Prisoners by Christopher Fry hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
Geoffrey Cumberlege Oxford University Press, 1951, Hardback in dust wrapper.
2nd impression. [First Edition: May, 1951]
From the cover: "In A Sleep of Prisoners Mr. Fry investigates dramatically the problems of four prisoners of war. Locked up in a church in enemy territory, the men find that both personal and general conflicts become more explosive in confinement. One soldier loses his temper and half strangles his friend.
In succeeding dreams each prisoner demonstrates his inner response to the events, extending himself, his companions and the problems they face on to a spiritual plane. The immediate surroundings suggest Biblical protagonists to the dreamers, and the attempted murder is seen successively in the stories of Cain and Abel, David and Absalom, and Abraham and Isaac. The general situation is seen by the fourth dreamer reflected in the story of Shadrac, Meshac, and Abednego.
The play shows development of themes Mr. Fry has not dealt with so directly since his early play The Firstborn. The main interest here is incisive exploration into how men see themselves, each other, and the struggle of the world to find a meaning and a progress. Followers of this playwright's work will be glad to find that the poetic lyricism and craftsmanship which have been noted in The Lady's Not For Burning and Venus Observed are not lacking here."

Fingerprints of the Gods: A Quest For the Beginning and the End by Graham Hancock
Fingerprints of the Gods: A Quest For the Beginning and the End by Graham Hancock hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
William Heinemann, 1995, Hardback in dust wrapper.
5th printing, 1st edition. [First Published: 1995] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;
From the cover: "In Fingerprints of the Gods Graham Hancock embarks on a worldwide quest to put together the pieces of a vast and mysterious jigsaw-puzzle of mankind's forgotten prehistory. In ancient ruins as far apart as Egypt's Great Sphinx, the strange Andean temples at Tiahuanaco and Mexico's awe-inspiring Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, he reveals not only the clear fingerprints of an unknown people who flourished during the last ice age, but also disquieting signs of high intelligence, technological sophistication and detailed scientific knowledge of the cosmos aeons before any previously known civilisation.
Through the memory-banks of universal myth and legend which store much of our species' prehistoric records Hancock uncovers traces of a precise scientific language, encoding the results of thousands of years of accurate astronomical observations. He studies ancient maps, incorporating spherical trigonometry, showing how the earth would have looked 12,000 years ago and with levels of accuracy not achieved by our own cartographers until the nineteenth century. Finally, he uses the most up-to-date techniques of geology and astronomy to show that the conventionally accepted dating of a number of intriguing archaeological sites around the world cannot possibly be correct and that they must be considered far, far older than was previously thought.
Hancock's extraordinary findings form the core of what could be an intellectual revolution, a dramatic and irreversible change in the way that we understand our own past and thus ourselves.
But there is something more, a warning maybe. Some of the most disturbing issues raised by Fingerprints of the Gods concern the type and extent of planetary catastrophe that would have had to occur in order to obliterate almost all traces of a large civilisation. The evidence for such a catastrophe, and indeed for more than one of them, is surprisingly strong. If they have happened before "

Grey Is the Colour of Hope by Irina Ratushinskaya
Grey Is the Colour of Hope by Irina Ratushinskaya hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
Hodder & Stoughton, 1988, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps [1];
From the cover: "Grey is the Colour of Hope is the gripping account of a young woman's experiences in the brutal conditions of a Soviet labour camp. Only twenty-eight years old when she was imprisoned for her poetry, Irina Ratushinskaya was already regarded as a leading writer of her generation, in the line of Mandelstam and Pushkin. She nearly died from maltreatment and a series of protest hunger strikes.
Yet it is an extraordinary story of hope, in which Irina Ratushinskaya's unerring sense of justice and a deep personal faith sustained her and the women dissidents she lived with in the Mordovian camp's notorious 'small Zone', an area reserved for 'especially dangerous' political criminals.
Together, the women built for themselves a life of selfless courage, order and mutual support. Grey is the Colour of Hope is as much their story as Irina's. With faithful attention to detail and surprising moments of humour, Irina Ratushinskaya's continuously gripping narrative culminates in her unexpected release. It came as the result of intense pressure from the Western media, political and church sources, and the petitions of countless individuals who were deeply moved by the poet's courageous struggle.
Fluently translated by her friend and interpreter Alyona Kojevnikov, Information Director of Keston College in Kent, Grey is the Colour of Hope contains some of Irina Ratushinskaya's previously unpublished poems."

Edward Lear and His World by John Lehmann
Edward Lear and His World by John Lehmann hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
Thames & Hudson, 1977, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Plates;
From the cover: "Edward Lear (1812-1888) was not only a pioneer writer of nonsense rhymes, limericks and songs, author of "The Owl and the Pussy-cat" and "The Dong with a luminous Nose", so widely known and treasured by old and young alike. He was a many-sided genius, draughtsman, illustrator and water-colourist as well as nonsense-writer; his travel books and voluminous correspondence are among the most delightful of the nineteenth century. One would little suspect from his work and his very active social life that Lear was a melancholy man, emotionally frustrated, of delicate health, suffering from epilepsy, bronchitis, asthma. Lear loved people and became passionately devoted to many of them, and he was greatly loved by everyone who came in contact with him, for his gentleness and delightful playfulness and humour. It was the career of 'topographical landscape painter' that he chose for himself, however, and it took him to Ireland, France, Italy, Albania, Greece, the Near East, India. His travel books, like his drawings, watercolours, lithographs and paintings, are marvellously executed, sharp observations of the minutest details from all the countries he visited, many of which were hardly accessible to the nineteenth-century traveller. The adventurous and pioneering sense which drove Lear compulsively to such remote and wild places is perhaps one reason for the thrilling, crisp intensity and freshness conveyed in his art.
John Lehmann offers in this book, the first general study of Lear for many years, an absorbing account of this extraordinary man's life and work, his restless journeys, his immense industry, his many and devoted friends who included Holman Hunt, Tennyson, Queen Victoria whose drawing master he became and many more of the most interesting personalities in England at that time. Mr Lehmann studies separately Lear's achievement as a nonsense-writer who brilliantly illustrated his own verses, his career as painter and draughtsman, and his travel books, so full of fresh observation of people and places and touches of a unique humour."

An Oxford University Chest by John Betjeman
An Oxford University Chest by John Betjeman hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
Oxford University Press, 1979, Paperback.
2nd printing. [First Published: 1979] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;
From the cover: "The Oxford University Chest is that august university's quaint term for its treasury, so called because its curators used to keep the cash in an iron-studded box. Sir John Betjeman's book is, therefore, aptly named, for it is a treasure-house of amusing sketches of university life, lyrical tributes to Oxford's pastoral pleasures, and characteristically pungent architectural judgements. First published in 1938, and reproduced here without revision or retrospective embellishment, An Oxford University Chest is a delightful period piece, an unashamedly sentimental evocation of the charms, beauties, and absurdities of Oxford.
For Betjeman there are three Oxfords: 'Christminster', 'Motopolis', and the University. 'Christminster' is the market town of Hardy's Jude the Obscure, with its narrow streets, terrace-houses, local pubs, and cheerful community spirit. 'Motopolis' is Betjeman's name for the industrial invasion of the town begun by Lord Nuffield's motor car factory. But the University is the real focus of this book its ridiculous yet magnificent pageantry, its bewildering vocabulary ('schools', 'Torpids', 'subfusc'), and above all its 'characters'. We meet Professor Harpoon, pottering along unchallenged in his field of Medieval Ichthyology ; 'Buffy' Bounce, an old 'Blue' not overburdened with grey matter; pompous, port-swilling undergraduates with imposing titles; dim cocoa-sipping undergraduates with flat, unmemorable surnames; omniscient 'scouts' (college servants), the uncrowned kings of the colleges, to whom no don or undergraduate is a hero.
Over a third of the book is devoted to an architectural tour of the town and university buildings, in which factual information is enlivened by anecdotes and accounts of relevant historical events.
This rich mixture is complemented by Moholy Nagy's remarkable photographs, Osbert Lancaster's irreverent line drawings, and etchings of the town's magnificent buildings.
The Oxford that Betjeman describes may no longer exist, and perhaps it never did. There is no doubt, however, that this book offers a magical distillation of the charm that Oxford still exerts over every visitor or citizen."
Good. A little faded at the spine and on to the margins of the wrappers. Leans slightly. Pages gently age tanned.

Oxford University Press, 1979, Paperback.
2nd printing. [First Published: 1979] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

The English Market Town: A Social and Economic History 1750-1914 by Jonathan Brown
The English Market Town: A Social and Economic History 1750-1914 by Jonathan Brown hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
The Crowood Press, 1988, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Black & White Drawings;
From the cover: "To the casual visitor or tourist, the traditional English market town might appear to he peaceful and unhurried, unchanged for the centuries of its existence. In fact, between 1750 and the present day these towns have greatly changed in character and role. In this detailed and highly readable book, Jonathan Brown describes these transitions.
Using contemporary photographs, engravings and quotations, the author first evokes the crowded and busy scenes of the eighteenth-century market town, with streets full of livestock and farm produce, labourers seeking employment and cheap-jacks hawking their wares, and goes on to trace the effects of the new industries and improved transport on the culture and economy of these towns, which often declined in the face of competition from the new industrial centres. He examines how some market towns were able to respond to these pressures and become prosperous new commercial centres, while others were left behind by the pace of this new industrial society, becoming instead the tranquil backwaters and tourist attractions we know today."
Good+ in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with commensurate wear to the dust wrapper. Dust wrapper is stained on the reverse with a lable reinforcing the head of the spine. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight. Pages slightly age-tanned at the margins.

The story of English furniture by Bernard Price
The story of English furniture by Bernard Price hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
British Broadcasting Corporation [B.B.C./BBC], 1979, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Contains a glossary of terms. 2nd printing. [First Published: 1978] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Diagrams; Tables; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;
From the cover: "This book was written to accompany the BBC television series The Story of English Furniture. While it may be used as a work of reference it can also be read from cover to cover as a story a story which embraces social history, discovery, craftsmanship and achievement.
The development of English craftsmanship and design is traced from the days of the anonymous medieval joiner through the era of the cabinet maker and the work of Chippendale, Hepplewhite and their contemporaries in the 'Golden Age of English Furniture' up to the present century.
It is perhaps because furniture forms part of the backcloth to our everyday experience that its evolution and design is frequently taken for granted. The Story of English Furniture seeks to explain the designs of different periods and to create further interest in the appreciation of the English heritage.
The book demonstrates how architecture and furniture design have been firmly linked through the centuries, from the oak refectory table of the medieval hall to the unit furniture of the twentieth century town house. We see how methods of construction, available timber, shape and decorative features may assist in dating and identifying individual pieces. We are also made aware that conflicts have arisen from the introduction of machinery into what was previously the domain of the individual craftsman, but that in the modern world an intelligent use of machinery is essential in order to satisfy mass demand.
Above all, the book provides clear evidence that the quality of design and craftsmanship of each age is directly related to the interest and demands of the customer."

Before the Knife: Memories of An African Childhood by Carolyn Slaughter
Before the Knife: Memories of An African Childhood by Carolyn Slaughter hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
Doubleday, 2002, Hardback in dust wrapper.
From the cover: "Here, in her own words, prize-winning novelist Carolyn Slaughter tells the story of a family that destroyed itself from within, and of the ways she found to overcome terrors that no child should have to bear.
Growing up in a remote British protectorate (now Botswana) in the heart of the Kalahari Desert, Carolyn was inspired by the stark beauty of her childhood home. All too soon, this magnificent and isolated landscape would become a refuge for a six-year-old girl with nowhere to turn. Neither her mother, doomed by depression and guilt, nor her sister could shield her from the most terrible of violations. In the end, she would learn not only how to survive, but how to save her own soul.
In prose unforgettable for its lyric beauty and subtle irony, Before the Knife offers us powerful lessons about survival, and about the triumph of love over hate."

A Garden Lost in Time: The Mystery of the Ancient Gardens of Aberglasney by Penny David
A Garden Lost in Time: The Mystery of the Ancient Gardens of Aberglasney by Penny David hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
Seven Dials, 2000, Paperback.
First in this ed. ition. [First: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1999] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Maps;
From the cover: "Past and future meet in a magical space where 19th- and 18th-century plantings touch remnants from the Renaissance and medieval days and where a beautiful restoration has brought a forgotten world back to life.
Lavish, oversized colour photos and artful text lead you through the nine magnificent gardens of the venerable Welsh estate, Aberglasney. Wander in woods, brambles, and vine-strewn tunnels more than 700 years old. For more than 50 years, they were left to decay, but renovation has brought back landscapes bright and strong, repaired the broken masonry, and returned order to the Italianate Cloisters, Victorian arboretum, garden walk; and everywhere on the grounds. As the work proceeded, layers of the past emerged including the only possible survivor in England of a Renaissance garden plan.
This compelling narrative reads like a historical detective story, in which gardeners and archaeologists unravel the garden's puzzles and the mysteries of its origins."
Introduction by: Penelope Hobhouse

Basso Cantante: An Autobiography by David Franklin
Basso Cantante: An Autobiography by David Franklin hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
Gerald Duckworth & Co, 1969, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;
From the cover: "In this book David Franklin writes about two of his careers: the first as a basso cantante which was cut short by a throat operation and the second in radio.
The beginning of his singing career was bound up with the halcyon days of pre-war Glyndebourne. He recalls, wittily and nostalgically, the magic atmosphere which seemed to surround John Christie's activities. He describes the pleasures and the difficulties of working with Jani Strasser, Fritz Busch and Carl Ebert and gives a fascinating glimpse of the life of a young singer in that circle.
Franklin goes on to describe from the inside the post-war building up of Covent Garden, in which he played a conspicuous part. Then a most important part of the book is concerned with the problems of the singer in preparing a major role. He takes the reader through two contrasting parts in his repertoire, Baron Ochs in Rosenkavalier, and Sarastro in The Magic Flute. He includes provocative comments about the standards of teaching singing in England, about singing operas in English, and about the historical reasons for the condition of professional music in Britain.
The last part of the book shows the development of his second career, in which he has made a second, and even bigger, reputation. He has just been given an award by the Writers' Guild of Great Britain, for the best British radio features script of 1968, for his programme Cambridge Revisited. He is a member of the very successful My Music radio team, and he is now to succeed Kenneth Home as chairman of Twenty Questions, another challenge for his urbanity, versatility, and wit."
Good in Poor Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper pulled at the head of the upper panel with untidy, closed, tears to the join and leading edge with further nick, chips and marks elsewhere. Gently bruised at the head, tail and corners of the binding. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight.
Black boards with Silver titling to the Spine.

A Vision of Eden: The Life and Work of Marianne North by Marianne North
A Vision of Eden: The Life and Work of Marianne North by Marianne North hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
Webb & Bower, 1980, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings;
From the cover: "Marianne North, an unmarried middle-aged Victorian lady of comfortable means, set off in 1871 on her first expedition to make a pictorial record of the tropical and exotic plants of the world. The story of her travels to every continent in the world, often alone and enduring hardships and dangers in conditions so primitive as to be outside the experience of the modern generation, is told in this abridged version of her travel memoirs and autobiography, first published in 1893 under the title Recollections of a Happy Life. The results of her wanderings were her astonishing collection of over 800 paintings, now housed in the Marianne North Gallery at Kew, and this is the first time that they have been reproduced in book form. She had a remarkable eye for detail, both in her writing and her painting, and she emerges through her work as strong-willed, sometimes prejudiced, but always humorous and kind-hearted; an extraordinary example of the Victorian pioneering spirit.
In his introduction Anthony Huxley discusses her work from a modern botanical viewpoint, and Professor Brenan, Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, explains how the Marianne North Gallery became part of the expansion of the Gardens towards the end of the last century."
Introduction by: J. P. M. Brenan & Anthony Huxley

3rd impression. [First Edition: 1983] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Facsimiles; Colour Photographs; Diagrams;
From the cover: "Recording the passing of time has absorbed and challenged mankind for thousands of years, but it was not until the Middle Ages that a fundamental advance was made when the first mechanical clocks harnessed the power of the falling weight and the unwinding spring. Hugh Tait traces the history of clocks and watches from the earliest medieval examples to modern times, with special reference to the matchless collection on display at the British Museum. From the grand long-case clocks to the most exquisite of watches, this book shows how invention and mechanical ingenuity have been matched with craftsmanship and artistry for more than five hundred years. The China Dream: The Elusive Quest For the Last Great Untapped Market On Earth by JOE STUDWELL
The China Dream: The Elusive Quest For the Last Great Untapped Market On Earth by JOE STUDWELL hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
Profile Books, 2002, Paperback.
First in this, paperback, edition.
From the cover: "For 700 years, ever since outsiders first wrote about the place, the world has believed there are untold riches to be harvested in China. More recently, with the rise of globalisation, the spread of capitalism, and the growth in its population to 1. 3 billion, the belief in China's unparalleled potential has taken on the order of an obsession. During the 90s, China astounded the world with double-digit annual growth rates while attracting over $300 billion in foreign investment. Politicians, economists and business leaders everywhere foresaw in China a market for goods and services to dwarf all others. In this thoroughly researched and engaging book, Joe Studwell provides a provocative analysis of the 'China Dream'. He takes to task these predictions of growth and instead foresees an economic crisis for China in the wake of the foreign-investment gold rush of the last ten years. A crisis which will destroy the hopes of outsiders realising their investment dreams."
Good. A pleasant enough reading copy.

Cruise Control by Wensley Clarkson
Cruise Control by Wensley Clarkson hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
Blake Publishing, 2003, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;
From the cover: "Over the last two decades, Tom Cruise has steered himself coolly through Tinseltown on a fairy-tale trip from poverty to superstardom. Of big-screen names today, he's one of the biggest. From the start, his fine acting, boy-next-door looks and nice-guy smile ensured him a place at the top of Hollywood's A-list and his increasingly brilliant and mature performances in films such as Vanilla Sky, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut and Minority Report have kept him there.
Yet beyond the impeccable manners and the charming smile, little is known of this publicity-shy, intensely private man, always at pains to keep his off-screen life to himself. Author Wensley Clarkson has spent years gathering interviews from around the world with those close to Tom and has unearthed a complex and intriguing character who, from his teens, has been driven by a potent combination of talent, hard ambition, past demons and the need for total control of every aspect of his life.
In Cruise Control, Wensley Clarkson reveals in depth:
Very Good in Good+ Dust Wrapper. Gently bruised at the spine ends and corners with resultant slight wear to the dust wrapper. Pages lightly age-tanned.
Black boards with Silver titling to the Spine.

In Cruise Control, Wensley Clarkson reveals in depth:
- How the broken home and poverty of his childhood shaped Tom in fundamental ways that have affected him throughout his life.
- Tom's early interest in the priesthood, his difficulties with women, and his involvement with the Church of Scientology.
- Complete accounts of the many women in his life, including an affair with a woman nearly twice his age, and the last word on the dark rumours surrounding his sex life.
- The controversial beliefs that masked a secret and shocking political ambition.
- Candid and surprising tales of Tom's antics both on and off the screen.
- Tom's marriage to Nicole Kidman, the real reason they adopted children, and the excruciating truth about the role Penelope Cruz played in the breakup.

Country House Garden by David Hatchett
Country House Garden by David Hatchett hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
David & Charles, 1983, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;
From the cover: "Gardening on a grand scale is a slowly disappearing feature of our countryside, but at Cornwell Manor, deep in the rolling hills of the North Cotswolds, many of the traditions and values of the past have been uniquely preserved.
The stone built house, dating back to 1640, is set in an 800 hectare estate and surrounded by three hectares of magnificent private gardens that testify to the creative skills of the landscape designer. The days when twelve gardeners were employed at the Manor have long since passed; but, with a small dedicated team, David Hatchett as head gardener has been able to retain the high standards of a more extravagant age by combining the best of the 'old ways' with modern economic methods of cultivation. In a month-by-month record he gives an account of the land under his care, passing on much information learned from years of practical experience.
The shallow limestone soil of the Cotswolds is a challenge to the most ambitious gardener, and David Hatchett's work and the plants he tends are enormously varied. In his charge are a thriving vegetable garden, labour intensive but full of character; greenhouses which keep the house supplied with vegetables and flowers all year round; rock, woodland and water gardens where a close harmony with the surrounding countryside has been carefully maintained; formal flower borders and terraced lawns; and numerous small secluded corners, tucked behind stone walls and yew hedges, each with its own particular charm.
This detailed journal of a typical year in a Cotswold garden provides not only a fascinating insight into the world of a professional horticulturist but should prove a source of inspiration to all keen amateurs, no matter how modest their plot."
Very Good in Very Good Dust Wrapper.

Celtic Britain by Homer Sykes
Celtic Britain by Homer Sykes hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
Phoenix Illustrated, 1998, Paperback.
Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;
From the cover: "Who were the Celts? What part did they play in our land's history? In Celtic Britain, Homer Sykes embarks on a fascinating journey though the mysterious landscapes and artefacts bequeathed to us by the Celts. Over 120 evocative photographs take us from Cornwall, through England, Wales and up to Scotland. We visit little-known sites that belong to pre-Celtic times, ruined cells where Celtic holy men performed Christian ceremonies during the Dark Ages, enigmatic sites such as Stonehenge, Avebury, and places that are shrouded in the mysteries of Arthurian legend. The powerful narrative explores the historical and archaeological evidence surrounding the myths, folktales and sites that are scattered throughout Britain: saints who saved lives by restoring heads to shoulders, eels that coiled around patients legs to cure them, the mystery of the bluestones at Carn Menyn, and many more."
