What Went Wrong?: The Clash Between Islam and Modernity in the Middle East by Bernard Lewis

What Went Wrong?: The Clash Between Islam and Modernity in the Middle East by Bernard Lewis lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Weidenfeld & Nicholson, 2002, Hardback in dust wrapper.

From the cover: "For many centuries, the world of Islam was at the forefront of human achievement — the greatest military and economic power in the world, and the leader in the arts and sciences of civilization. And then everything changed. The previously despised West won victory after victory, first on the battlefield and in the marketplace, then in almost every aspect of public and even private life.

In What Went Wrong? Bernard Lewis examines the anguished reaction of the Islamic world as it tried to understand why things had changed. He provides a fascinating portrait of a culture in turmoil. He shows how the Middle East turned its attention to understanding European weaponry and military tactics, commerce and industry, government and diplomacy, education and culture. He describes how some Middle Easterners asked 'where did we go wrong?' and 'how do we put it right?', while others asked 'who did this to us?' and fastened blame on a series of scapegoats, both external and internal. He brilliantly highlights the differences between the Western and Middle Eastern cultures from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries through comparisons of such things as Christianity and Islam, music and the arts, the position of women, secularism and the civil society, the clock and the calendar.

Bernard Lewis is one of the West's foremost authorities on Islamic history and culture. In this book he charts the long decline of Islamic power, a decline which helps to explain both the anger behind the events of September 11th and the intensity of the Arab-Israeli and other conflicts."

Like all books in the series it details the superlatives of the subject, and these facts are interspersed with a wealth of fascinating information, reaching far beyond the scope of many reference works.

This book deals with mountains from the broadest possible viewpoint, presenting not only a most comprehensive guide to mountains but also paying much attention to the inter-action of mountains and men. After introductory essays the main part of the book presents a worldwide gazetteer of summits divided into countries and ranges. There are appendices including a calendar of mountain events, lists of organisations and periodicals, as well as a fully comprehensive index.

The book is copiously illustrated with many maps and line diagrams as well as beautiful black and white and full colour illustrations depicting the splendours of mountains, the major land feature of the Earth, which have, for man, an irresistible and deep-seated attraction."

Punch in the country by Alan Coren

Punch in the country by Alan Coren lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Hutchinson, 1975, Hardback in dust wrapper.

From the cover: "In all but the most callous and unconcerned of us, the fear is daily growing that pretty soon the only way we shall be able to distinguish between town and country is that the country will be rustier.

And whether the junk now littering so much of our landscape is man-built or merely man-deposited matters less than the obvious truth that it usually has less to commend it than the humblest tree. If, indeed, you get the chance these days to compare the two: because, if only God can make a tree, only man can make a sideboard.

And yet there's still hope, in that we, and those that run us, are slowly-waking to this truth; waking, it has to be said, much in the manner of a dehibernating tortoise, but waking.

This book is about both these broad aspects, about the country past and the country present, with a vision or two, good and bad, about the country future. It's about urban creep and country recoil, and about the ubiquitously contested frontiers between concrete and grass, and about the people who inhabit both.

And because we believe that there is no more piquant and palatable sauce for truth than humour and satire, the writers and artists who have contributed to this brilliant mosaic are not merely the best in the business, they're also the funniest: Keith Waterhouse, Paul Jennings, George Melly, Thelwell, Wolf Mankowitz, Alan Coren, Miles Kington, ffolkes, Michael Parkinson, John Wells, Larry, Alan Brien, Hunter Davies, John Arlott, Tidy, John Crosby, Basil Boothroyd, James Cameron, and many, many more.

They just hope their joint message gets across, that's all. It'd be one hell of a waste if it didn't. Remember, this book was a tree, once."

Birds of Sea and Fresh Water by Karel Stastny

Birds of Sea and Fresh Water by Karel Stastny lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Hamlyn, 1985, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Colour Drawings;

From the cover: "Countless birds have their home and feed by or from fresh, brackish or salt water. It is the only common characteristic of this diverse 'group' which ranges from herons and kingfishers who live by rivers to the gulls and auks of the open sea. Also included are aquatic birds like waders who search for food along the seashore, and wildfowl — geese, ducks, swans — who inhabit marshland and inland waters.

The Hamlyn Colour Guide to Birds of Sea and Fresh Water is a superbly illustrated guide to the most common British and European aquatic birds, enabling readers to identify the birds in the adult and juvenile form, as well as illustrating where appropriate, egg coloration and size, mating rituals and the bird in flight. There are interesting chapters on how man has played his part in the lives of the birds, by either destroying or endangering species, or by saving them from extinction. With this in mind, the need for conservation and protection is firmly stressed."

Burnt Toast: And Other Philosophies of Life by Teri Hatcher

Burnt Toast: And Other Philosophies of Life by Teri Hatcher lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

HarperCollins, 2006, Hardback in dust wrapper.

2nd impression. [First Edition: 2006]

From the cover: "Like most women, Teri Hatcher learned her first lessons through her mother. And like many women, her mother had a hard time putting herself first. If a piece of toast got burned, she ate it herself, giving the better slices away. While this act of love and sacrifice was well intended, it also taught Teri a lesson that was hard to unlearn: your own satisfaction is not worth a slice of bread.

If you've ever given up something good and taken the worst for yourself; if you've wondered if you'll ever have sex again; if you've found yourself planning to fail rather than expecting to succeed, then you've eaten the burnt toast and Teri Hatcher would like to have a word with you!

Full of her foibles and successes, unexpected vulnerability and frank openness (from looking in the refrigerator for Mr. Right to being told by her daughter's paediatrician that she should date more), Burnt Toast is an intimate, uplifting portrait of one woman's daily struggles and successes."

That's Another Story: The Autobiography by Julie Walters

That's Another Story: The Autobiography by Julie Walters lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Weidenfeld & Nicholson, 2008, Hardback in dust wrapper.

A Later Printing. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: "Julie Walters has been described as the nation's most popular, actress and comedienne. She has been delighting us on screen and on stage for over twenty-five years and — thanks to her undoubted talent, infectious spirit and self-deprecating humour — we have taken her to our hearts. Now she tells us her own story, in her own words.

She was born in fifties Birmingham, daughter of an austere Irish Catholic mother. She was sent to school in a convent and from a young age always wanted to be an actress — but to appease her mother she first went into nursing. This didn't last for long, though, and she soon went to join The Everyman Theatre in Liverpool.

West End success with Educating Rita followed, and she quickly replicated her success on film, playing opposite Michael Caine. Julie's collaborations with her close friend Victoria Wood have given us, among others, the unforgettable character 'Mrs Overall' in Acorn Antiques. Julie has also starred in a range of films including Billy Elliot, Calendar Girls and Mamma Mia!, and she has recently charmed a new generation of fans playing Mrs Weasley in the Harry Potter films.

This, her long-awaited autobiography, candidly reveals all the highs and lows in an extraordinary life. It is a remarkable piece of writing: funny, painfully felt, moving, warm, fiercely intelligent and — above all — wholly entertaining."

The Materials and Techniques of Painting by Jonathan Stephenson

The Materials and Techniques of Painting by Jonathan Stephenson lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Thames & Hudson, 1989, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: "In the distant past, all artists inherited a tried and tested body of knowledge on materials and techniques while apprenticed in their masters' workshop. Much of this lore has been lost to recent generations, however, and today's painters — often working in isolation and with little training – lack authoritative guidance on the basics of their craft.

This practical manual restores to contemporary painters the heritage that is truly theirs by providing a single reliable source of vital information. Designed for use both as a textbook and for quick reference, it forms an invaluable guide for both the beginner and the advanced practitioner. Here are full details of pigments, media — from oils, resins and gums to glues, egg and the synthetics — and fillers; types of support (wood, cloth, paper, stone, walls); and studio equipment, from brushes and palettes to painting knives and easels. Throughout, the author demonstrates functions that are too often taken for granted, or little understood, and explains why particular raw materials are used, as well as how they are prepared.

Clear, readable descriptions, accompanied by full-colour demonstrations, offer a complete introduction to the major traditional techniques of painting — oil, tempera, water-colour, even fresco — and to more recent innovations, such as acrylics and silica painting.

With hundreds of specially prepared illustrations, this remarkable book reveals the vital link between the various media and makes the case for a systematic approach to painting in which materials are working for, and not against, the artist.

From the first essentials of laying a palette and applying paint, to hints on how to varnish, frame and preserve the finished work, The Materials and Techniques of Painting is undoubtedly the one essential and enduring work of reference for every contemporary artist."

Poverty, Chastity and Obedience: The True Virtues by H. A. [Harry Abbott] Williams

Poverty, Chastity and Obedience: The True Virtues by H. A. [Harry Abbott] Williams lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Mitchell Beazley, 1975, Hardback in dust wrapper.

From the cover: "A new book by H. A. Williams is an important event, not just for committed Christians, but for all of us interested in the meaning and value of life.

Former Dean of Trinity College, Cambridge, and now a member of the Community of the Resurrection, H A Williams is no dry-as-dust or academic theologian: his insight is into each of us as persons in real-life situations, and in his preaching and writing he reaches into the depths of what we are to reveal the Spirit of God at work.

In The True Wilderness, published in 1963, he showed us how God uses our very loneliness and despair as a starting point to help us on to the road to a richer life of self-acceptance and self-discovery. In True Resurrection, published in 1971, he wrote of the Christian transformation which we can experience in our own lives of being dead and then, through God's grace, coming again to life.

Poverty, Chastity and Obedience takes us further into a fundamental reconsideration of what it means to be fully human. Starting from the premise that all evil springs from my refusal to discover who arid what I truly am, my failure to realize that I and the Father are one, H. A. Williams explores the oft-maligned virtues of poverty, chastity and obedience. He explains their true meaning and vital relevance to a society that seems increasingly dedicated to emotional and spiritual anarchy.

In learning the true virtues Jesus taught us first to learn the truth about ourselves and then to have the courage to strip away our false and protective self-images and instead allow the Holy Spirit to lead us into often unexpected sorts of heaven.

That is the starting point for H. A. Williams's thrilling new book — and all of us are in for some surprises."

A Dictionary of Liturgy and Worship by J. G. [John Gordon] Davies

A Dictionary of Liturgy and Worship by J. G. [John Gordon] Davies lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

SCM Press, 1972, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Diagrams; Plans;

From the cover: "As a reference book this present volume is intended to provide background knowledge about worship for those who are regularly involved in it or would learn something about it. It seeks to concentrate upon the information that Christians today need in order to participate with understanding in the worship of the traditions to which they belong. At the same time, it aims to assist them to appreciate traditions and contemporary practices other than their own, familiarity with which is required to further the cause of ecumenical co-operation.

The separate articles are not confined to simple definitions, but give the historical background to the subject treated and seek to relate this to the contemporary scene. However, while a reliable factual content is essential, emphasis is laid upon its interpretation, with particular reference to the principles on which the practice, object, etc. is founded or used. In this way the reader will be enabled to understand not only what has been done or is done but why it has been or is done.

The entries relate not only to the historic Christian churches, such as the Anglican, the Lutheran, the Presbyterian and the Roman Catholic, but also to those bodies which have intimate links with the biblical and Christian inheritance, such as the Pentecostals and the Unitarians. In addition, accounts are given of the worship of other major world religions, e. g. Judaism and Islam. In order to ensure representative accounts, the contributors to the Dictionary have been chosen from recognized liturgical experts within the different churches.

Worship today is, of course, not simply a matter of history. Worship today is undergoing a crisis. Hence the need, which is emphasized in several entries, for experimental forms, for attention to the problems of indigenization, to secularization, to the relation of liturgy and culture and liturgy and mission.

It is hoped that the Dictionary will be found useful by several types of reader. It is intended to appeal to church leaders, clergy and ministers, to laity and to students who wish to increase their understanding of the history of contemporary practice of worship and liturgy."

A Theological Word Book Of The Bible by Alan Richardson

A Theological Word Book Of The Bible by Alan Richardson lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

SCM Press, 1956, Hardback in dust wrapper.

5th printing. [First Published: 1950]

From the cover: "By entitling this volume A Theological Word Book of the Bible it is hoped that a clear and concise indication might be given of its content and purpose. The adjective 'theological' is intended to indicate a limited aim — namely, to elucidate the distinctive meanings of the key-words of the Bible. Historical, geographical, archaeological and philological details are not elaborated, except — and this is very important — in so far as they are necessary for theological understanding. This must not be taken to imply that such considerations are of little moment: the Christian faith is founded upon actual events of history, and hence theological interpretation and historical investigation can never be separated from each other. The contributors were asked, however, to focus attention upon the theological meanings of the words with which they deal, because it would appear that it is precisely at this point that the ordinary reader of the Bible, as well as the preacher and the teacher, requires clear and positive help. There are many excellent works available to-day from which a knowledge of biblical history and literature may be derived, whereas we know of nothing that is comparable to this attempt at the theological elucidation of the whole Bible. Thus, while every writer has based his contribution upon a scholarly study of the Bible, with the aid of every resource which modern historical and literary criticism can provide, he has presented the results of this study in such a way as to help the reader to understand the real import of the biblical words without confusing him with all the complicated technical apparatus of biblical science. The text of the English Revised Version of Holy Scripture has been used, and all Hebrew and Greek words have been transliterated into English characters."

Understanding The Old Testament: The Way of Holiness by J. E. [Joseph Edward] Fison

Understanding The Old Testament: The Way of Holiness by J. E. [Joseph Edward] Fison lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Oxford University Press, 1962, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Diagrams; Maps; Plans;

From the cover: "THIS companion to the Old Testament has been written both for the general reader and for the student who wants a brief introduction to the subject. The author believes that to understand the Old Testament it is no good merely to read about it, and he has taken pains throughout to point the way to the words of the Bible itself. Canon Fison shows with conviction how the Old Testament is from the beginning a preparation for the New, and how the remarkable history of the Jews, their country, their temple, their leaders and their prophets made a 'way of holiness' for the Messiah. He finds time to discuss fully many of the minor problems that often puzzle the reader of the Bible, such as the apparent unworthiness of Jacob compared with Esau, or the death of Uzzah when he was trying to steady the Ark."

The Oxford Companion to the Bible by Bruce M. Metzger & Michael D. Coogan

The Oxford Companion to the Bible by Bruce M. Metzger & Michael D. Coogan lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Oxford University Press, 1993, Paperback.

First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Maps [14];

From the cover: "For nearly two millennia, the Bible has been the cardinal text for Judaism and Christianity. Its stories and characters are part of both the repertoire of Western literature and the vocabulary of educated women and men. It is, however, more than a collection of ancient tales. Even before a canonical list of books considered sacred scripture or holy writ was established, the writings we now call the Bible were considered normative: they laid down the essential principles of how human beings should deal with God and with each other. The practice of quoting from, and alluding to, earlier texts as authoritative is found within the Bible itself and has continued unabated in subsequent Jewish and Christian writings. At the same time, the Bible has also been formative; subsequent generations of believers have seen themselves as descended from, and in continuity with, those to whom God had spoken and for whom he had acted definitively in the past, and the recital of those words and events has been instrumental in shaping the religious communities of succeeding generations. The Bible has thus had an immeasurable influence on Judaism and Christianity, on the cultures of which they have formed a part, and on all those traditions in some ways derived from them."

Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Upper wrapper slighty curled. Leans slightly. Text complete, clean and tight.

The Bright Cloud: The Bible in the Light of the Transfiguration by J. R. [James Russell] Macphail

The Bright Cloud: The Bible in the Light of the Transfiguration by J. R. [James Russell] Macphail lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Oxford University Press, 1956, Hardback in dust wrapper.

From the cover: "It is related of the Transfiguration of Christ that a bright cloud overshadowed the disciples; and, in the words of Jeremy Taylor, Christians generally are not in darkness, but within the fringes and circles of a bright cloud. As Mr. Macphail shows, we have glimpses of the brightness of the divine glory, mixed with the cloudiness inseparable from the limits of human understanding. The supreme example of this is the Incarnation, in which we acknowledge, without fully understanding, the divinity of Jesus Christ. From this point of view Mr. Macphail briefly surveys the whole Bible, starting with the first three Gospels, considering the Acts and Epistles, then the Old Testament in its relation to the New, and, finally, St. John's Gospel. The ideas here employed are soundly based on the work of leading theologians, and many readers will be grateful for their presentation in a book for the ordinary layman."

From the cover: "The Old Testament is the greatest storehouse of biography ever written. Yet its very wealth in vigorous personalities has, to a degree, obscured the story of these mighty characters. Their inspiring histories have been so intertwined with the events of their day that, except to the most careful reader, the real individual has not been entirely clear. Now, in this vivid volume, Dr. James uses the straight biographical method and presents the immortal personalities of the Old Testament as leaders in the thought and action of Israel. Each one stands out in full view, against the brilliant background of Old Testament times and happenings, a vital, vigorous, human figure.

Such men as Moses, David, Hosea, Nehemiah, such women as Deborah — these are the subjects of these biographies, each one built on a carefully explored and firmly laid foundation. And beyond the new insight into these numerous personalities, the reader has a stronger sense of the life and power that fill the pages of the Old Testament. Through these pages the reader gets the essential significance of the Old Testament, as revealed through its heroes."

The Joy of God by H. A. [Harry Abbott] Williams

The Joy of God by H. A. [Harry Abbott] Williams lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Mitchell Beazley, 1979, Hardback in dust wrapper.

From the cover: "H. A. Williams, formerly Dean of Trinity College, Cambridge, and now a monk of the Community of the Resurrection, is widely recognized as one of the most perceptive commentators on the meaning and reality of Christianity today. In The Joy of God He analyses the routes and origins of true happiness.

The Joy of God, he argues, is ours already, but, being too blind to recognize it, we have to discover it, not in religious theory, but in the warmth and sweetness and dryness and terror of actual living.

In this gentle and persuasive book, which seems likely to become a contemporary classic, the author points to the underlying presence of God's Joy in our work and leisure, in politics and the arts, in family life and friendship and, most significantly, in our view and understanding of ourselves. He demonstrates how the feelings of guilt, jealousy, fear and despair that would seem to distance us from ever attaining true Joy are, in fact, an intrinsic and essential part of that quest. It is only in coming to a true understanding of how we function that we can realize the Joy that is God."

Concise Dictionary of Religious Quotations by William Neil

Concise Dictionary of Religious Quotations by William Neil lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

A. R. Mowbray & Co., 1975, Paperback.

First in this, paperback, edition.

From the cover: "THERE are already well-known dictionaries of quotations which include among other things some items of a religious character. All quotations in this book are, however, specifically religious, though not exclusively Christian and not all necessarily sympathetic to religion. It is hoped that the took will be found useful for those who have to write or speak, teach or preach, and wish to check on the authorship or source of a well-remembered quotation or the exact words of a half-remembered quotation. In the process they may find under the subject headings unfamiliar quotations from a variety of sources which they would wish to employ. Perhaps not the least valuable use of this took may be to stimulate further thought and reflection along devotional lines. The primary source of religious quotations in a Christian context is of course he Bible itself, and in this connection the New English Bible has been used throughout. Christian verse, ancient and modern, must also be included and the Book of Common Prayer has many eminently quotable lines. Christian theologians, from St Augustine to the present day, have said or written things that are illuminating and memorable and many of these have been included, as well as significant thoughts from religious thinkers of other faiths. The overriding consideration has been that every contribution should be short enough to be quotable."

True Resurrection by H. A. [Harry Abbott] Williams

True Resurrection by H. A. [Harry Abbott] Williams lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Mitchell Beazley, 1972, Hardback in dust wrapper.

From the cover: "In 1965 H. A. Williams, then Dean of Trinity College, Cambridge, gave to contemporary readers the first mature fruits of a gloriously contemporary individual insight in his collection of sermons published under the title The True Wilderness — a book in which, in the author's words, I looked for God… in what we are… in the whole kaleidoscope of our personal experience. The first rediscovery of God was for the author in his aloneness — in that void where the person has to fight to establish his identity faced with the twin threats of isolation and absorption, a true wilderness experience, like Jesus' temptations in the desert.

The True Wildernesss was an immediate publishing success going through four reprints in the first year in the U. K. alone. Many readers found in the book a loving understanding and a depth and sensibility and gentleness often missing from the gospels of other contemporary Christian writers. The True Wilderness quickly came to be described as one of the spiritual classics of our time, relevant lo all those seeking to rediscover the Christian gospel as an undying fount of goodness and love in the depths of what we are.

Now, seven years later, the same author records for us in this deeply moving new book his experience of the ultimate Christian triumph, the divine transformation of despair into glory, of bankruptcy into limitless riches, of true wilderness into what Christians call true resurrection. All that separates and injures and destroys has been overcome by what unites and heals and creates. Death has been swallowed up by life.

The author examines the Christian doctrine of resurrection very fully for its theological significance. But theology for him is not in the last resort an academic study but a process of self-discovery. Hence True Resurrection, like The True Wilderness, is above all a deeply personal testament, the idea of resurrection being explored in every aspect of our personal experience in our friendships and trials and loves and failures, or. in the author's own order of writing in our bodies, our minds, our goodness, our suffering and our death."

The Nonconformists: In Search of a Lost Culture by James Munson

The Nonconformists: In Search of a Lost Culture by James Munson lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

S.P.C.K., 1991, Paperback.

First in this, paperback, edition.

From the cover: "The decline of English Nonconformity in the twentieth century may well be seen as being as profound a change in English history as the suppression of the monasteries under Henry VIII. Like the monasteries, some of its 'ruins' still bear testimony to Nonconformity's lost influence: the chapels turned into bicycle shops and off-licences, the great suburban churches in which a handful of the faithful gather where once thousands sat entranced under great preachers. Often dismissed as drab and narrow-minded, Nonconformity's passing is regarded as irreversible, and is rarely mourned.

Yet, as James Munson shows in this brilliant and controversial new study, the influence of Nonconformity on English society, literature, education, architecture, religion and politics-the whole culture summed up by the phrase, 'the Nonconformist conscience' — has been broad rather than drab. And despite its decline English Nonconformity has left, unlike the monasteries, an indelible mark on the national character which will long outlive its institutional strength.

This is a learned and beautifully-written book that redraws the map of English cultural history."

Dirt Music by Tim Winton

Dirt Music by Tim Winton lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Picador, 2001, Hardback in dust wrapper.

A Later Printing.

From the cover: "Georgie Jutland is a mess. At forty, with her career in ruins, she finds herself stranded in White Point with a fisherman she doesn't love and two kids whose dead mother she can never replace. Her days have fallen into domestic tedium and social isolation. Her nights are a blur of vodka and pointless loitering in cyberspace. Leached of all confidence, Georgie has lost her way; she barely recognizes herself.

One morning, in the boozy pre-dawn gloom, she looks up from the computer screen to see a shadow lurking on the beach below, and a dangerous new element enters her life. Luther Fox, the local poacher. Jinx. Outcast.

So begins an unlikely alliance. Set in the wild landscape of Western Australia, this is a novel about the odds of breaking with the past, a love story about people stifled by grief or regret, whose dreams are lost, whose hopes have dried up. It's a journey across landscapes within and without, about the music that sometimes arises from the dust.

In prose as haunting and beautiful as its setting, Dirt Music confirms Tim Winton's status as one of the finest novelists of his generation."

Ashes Victory: The Official Story of the Greatest Ever Test Series in the Team's Own Words by The England Cricket Team

Ashes Victory: The Official Story of the Greatest Ever Test Series in the Team's Own Words by The England Cricket Team lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Orion, 2005, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: "It was one of the most eagerly anticipated series ever: the world's two top sides, Australia and England, battling for the Ashes. It was sold out long before the first ball was bowled; and the warm-up limited-overs clashes showed that it would be tense. But no one expected what came next.

The first Test at Lord's began with a clatter of wickets, as England were beaten by 239 runs. The doom-mongers feared it would be business as usual, with English hopes crushed. Then in the second Test, England decided to take the attack to Australia. The tide began to turn.

England dominated the match, but ended up winning by just two runs in the closest finish to any Ashes Test in history. In the third Test, Australia's last pair clung on to save the match; and, on a tension-filled Sunday in the fourth Test, more than 8 million people were glued to their television sets as England edged towards a crucial victory. So it was all down to the final day of the last Test, when England had to bat to save the match…

In this fascinating book, the greatest series of all time is recalled by the England players. They take the reader inside the dressing room to reveal what was said as they plotted Australia's downfall, and explain what it's like to face a 95 mph bouncer with only a few runs needed for victory, or how it feels to take a wicket when a bad ball could lose the match. No cricket fan will ever forget this series; and this book will be a permanent reminder of the heroes who won the 2005 Ashes."

Distinguished Leaves: Poems for Tea-Lovers by Elizabeth Darcy Jones

Distinguished Leaves: Poems for Tea-Lovers by Elizabeth Darcy Jones lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Quiller, 2011, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Signed by the author on the title page — unverified and reflected as such in the lack of premium.

From the cover: "OUR DANCE THROUGH LIFE IS INFUSED WITH TEA, whether lovers' tea sipped from a shared mug or a favourite blend drunk to restore flagging spirits.

In Distinguished Leaves: Poems for tea-lovers thirty-seven different loose leaf teas come to life as characters, introducing us to their attributes in their own distinctive poetic form. Three 'tea people' also feature, including International Tea Artisan, Henrietta Lovell, on her mission to 'de-bag' Britain! With illuminating prose prefaces to each section of poems, 'Distinguished Leaves' not only informs but entertains, leaving us refreshed and pondering life's mysteries.

Effortlessly making 'posh teas' and sophisticated verse accessible, 'Distinguished Leaves' is quintessentially British — romantic and quirky. But it also takes us across the world and back in time to the teas and tea masters of the Far East where we discover why 'Fortune Favours the Tea'. Like tea, this book is much more than the sum of its parts.

Buy, brew, read and relax."

Antique Oriental Rugs and Carpets by Philip Bamborough

Antique Oriental Rugs and Carpets by Philip Bamborough lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Spring Books, 1989, Hardback in dust wrapper.

First in this edition. [First: 1979, Blandford Press] Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Maps;

From the cover: "Unlike many antiques that are collected, rugs and carpets are both functional and an integral part of interior decoration, thus being sought after both for their antique interest and for their aesthetic appeal. Collecting rugs and carpets is influenced as much by personal taste as by rarity and collectability.

The book introduces us to the fabulous world of the oriental rug. It takes us on a tour of the rug-making centres, showing how the traditional designs and colours have evolved and provides valuable advice on rug identification. Useful design and identification keys will help the reader with one of the recurring problems in rug collecting, that of attributing the rug to the right part of the world and to the right period. 64 pages of full colour photographs, enhanced by the large format of the book, display the beauty of the rugs and carpets covered.

Philip Bamborough is an expert on Islamic art and culture. He has a natural flair for explaining the complexities of oriental and antique rugs in an interesting and informative way.

Antique Oriental Rugs and Carpets will be invaluable both to collectors and dealers and to those who wish simply to enjoy rugs and carpets through the printed page."

Creative Design in Bobbin Lace by Ann Collier

Creative Design in Bobbin Lace by Ann Collier lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

B. T. Batsford, 1982, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs [104]; Colour Photographs [7]; Black & White Drawings [109];

From the cover: "Using traditional bobbin lace techniques and patterns as a basis, Ann Collier explores the exciting new directions in which she and others have been taking the craft of lace making.

For the benefit of those who have not worked bobbin lace before, she begins with the equipment one is going to need, the elementary bobbin lace stitches and then the fillings — meshes, plaited grounds and so on. Having set out the fundamentals she moves on to the making of representational motifs. It is possible to work any shape in lace, and instructions are given for making leaves, flowers, butterflies and moths, birds, trees, buildings, figures and animals.

Besides the representation of forms there are the considerations that are particularly important to producing lace as an art form. Coloured threads are necessary for more realistic effects, as is texture — for example, the use of a coarse thread for the trunk of a tree and a finer one for the branches. The next and most innovative stage is the creation of three-dimensional lace, producing a very interesting form of woven sculpture. The final part of the book is devoted to designing, and includes a highly-illustrated survey of international design interpretations.

This book will have a very broad appeal, not only to those who have always wanted to take up lace making but have not been attracted by the traditional forms, but also to those who have acquired expertise and want to expand it with a more modern approach to lace making."

The Cromwell Street Murders: The Detective's Story by John Bennett with Graham Gardner

The Cromwell Street Murders: The Detective's Story by John Bennett with Graham Gardner lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Sutton Publishing, 2005, Paperback.

First in this, paperback, edition. Cover illustration: Fred and Rose West / Policeman guarding 25 Cromwell Street. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Plans;

From the cover: "THE STORY OF SERIAL KILLERS FRED AND ROSE WEST is infamous, as is the 'house of horrors' — 25 Cromwell Street — where they buried many of their victims. What is less well known are the events of the investigation itself: the struggle to link Rose to the murders, the media interest which almost ruined the case for her prosecution, and the problems faced by a rural police force who had to deal with one of most notorious murder cases of the twentieth century.

For the first time retired DETECTIVE SUPERINTENDENT JOHN BENNETT QPM, the officer who was in charge of the investigation, together with BBC JOURNALIST GRAHAM GARDNER, reveals the drama, frustration, betrayal, blackmail, effort, tenacity and sheer heroism that turned the investigation into one of the saddest chapters in criminal history.

The arrest of the Wests was just the beginning. Fred admitted to some of the murders but insisted he had committed them alone. It was only the determination of the investigating officers which ensured that charges were laid against Rose. But when Fred committed suicide the Crown Prosecution Service, unconvinced that there was a case against her, considered withdrawing the charges. If that had happened, Rose West would today be free to walk the streets."

A Village Year by Alan C. Jenkins

A Village Year by Alan C. Jenkins lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Select Editions, 1992, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: "Villages are a source of fascination and love both for those who live in them and for those who do not.

Alan Jenkins, who has spent most of his life in villages, knows the customs and the characters intimately and in A Village Year he follows a typical English village month by month through the activities and seasons of the year, in an account that is part fiction, part fact, a style he has made all his own. His sharp observations of expected and unexpected events in the village result in a humorous and entertaining description of the villagers' daily life in which the reader is invited to take part. August is the month of the match — the annual cricket match against neighbouring villages. At other times the events in the Women's Institute and the Parish Council catch the interest, or the church with its Vicar and bell-ringers, or the local pub. The reader shares the villagers' sport, scandals, work, festivities, problems and pleasures. The text is illustrated with photographs of typical 'happenings' in the village, many of which have been taken by photographer James Ravilious, and also includes four of Edward Bawden's delightful colour lithographs."

Greece And Britain by Stanley Casson

Greece And Britain by Stanley Casson lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Collins, 1943, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Colour Plates [11]; Black & White Plates;

From the cover: "LT. -COL. STANLEY CASSON, distinguished scholar and archaeologist as well as brilliant author, has written this account of the relationship and mutual influence of Greece and Great Britain with the ease and wit which is based on profound scholarship, a vigorous and lively mind and love of the subject itself.

He gives a fascinating description of the earliest voyages of Greek sailors to England in search of tin; an almost unknown account of England in the sixteenth century by a Greek traveller side by side with an Elizabethan Englishman's account of a journey to Turkey which took him to the Greek Islands and mainland. He shows how with the seventeenth century came a revival of interest in classical Greece which reached its height in the eighteenth century. In the nineteenth century came the Greek War of Independence in which Britain took a small but enthusiastic part and from which she derived much inspiration. In the war of 1914-1918 Greece and Britain were allies — the author himself served in Salonika for two years — and once again in this war the two peoples are fighting together."

Renoir: My Father by Jean Renoir

Renoir: My Father by Jean Renoir lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

The Reprint Society London, 1962, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black and White Photographs;

From the cover: "Jean Renoir, who is himself a well-known and distinguished artist in his own medium of film direction, has written this book in much the same way as his father built up his paintings. Renoir would begin by quickly covering most of the canvas with strokes of colour, so that almost from the start, though shape and form remained indefinite, the canvas was a balanced whole; it was only gradually that 'out of the mist the body of the model or the outlines of a landscape would emerge, as on a photographic plate immersed in a developing-bath'. So in this biography the son does not follow a strictly chronological sequence, but darts backwards and forwards over Renoir's long and prolific life, building up a warm and living picture in rapid brush-strokes of anecdote, personal recollection and remembered conversations.

The picture that emerges is that of a good and lovable man who believed passionately in simplicity and filled his working life with a single-minded devotion to his art. The rest of Renoir's life is the story — unusual for a creative genius — of a wonderfully happy marriage.

The kaleidoscope of memories of this happy marriage, many of them bathed in the sunlight of the Midi and the South where the family spent most of their summers, forms the best part of this endearing story. Jean Renoir brings vividly to life a delightful family circle, which included himself and his two brothers, cousin Gabrielle, the girls who came to model for Renoir and became for a time part of that circle, Renoir's painter friends (especially Cezanne) and other friends and dealers who had first perceived his genius in his years of obscurity. And always at the centre of the circle, Renoir himself, prolific in his output, almost saintly in his goodness and simplicity, unorthodox in his views on the upbringing of children, whimsically humorous, an artist of the highest distinction and a charming and very remarkable man."

The Charm of the English Village by P. H. [Peter Hampson] Ditchfield

The Charm of the English Village by P. H. [Peter Hampson] Ditchfield lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Bracken Books, 1985, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings [116];

From the cover: "In the days of our forefathers, in Elizabethan or Jacobean times, there were no railroads to transport slates from Wales, or dump down wagon -loads of bricks… in a country that possessed good stone-quarries. They were obliged to use the materials which nature in their own district afforded. This was the great secret of their success.

So P. H. Ditchfield astutely observes in the opening pages of his delighted and delightful exploration of the English rural heritage, as it showed itself to him in the early years of this century. England is famous for its villages: for their variety, for their picturesque charm, their blending into the landscape from which they seem to have grown. Here are Cavendish, Woebley and West Wycombe, Elmley Castle, Eardisland and Corsham, Ewelme, Pembridge and Burwash -villages which, despite the march of time and the ravages of twentieth century transport, are places we would still pick for ourselves today.

In this equally picturesque and handsomely produced book, P. H. Ditchfield wanders through the land, looking at the cottages, gardens, churches, inns, shops, almshouses, schools, bridges, sundials, weathercocks — all the myriad details which add up to the beauty of village England. The delicate and affectionate drawings by Sydney Jones of all these aspects of village life add the final touch to this nostalgic, yet still relevant, ramble through the rural hamlets of England."

Devon & Cornwall by Denys Kay-Robinson

Devon & Cornwall by Denys Kay-Robinson lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

John Bartholomew & Son, 1977, Hardback.

Jacket illustration: Teignmouth. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Maps;

From the cover: "Devon and Cornwall are challenging subjects to write about. Many English counties inspire strong loyalties and attachments, but few produce a kind of patriotic emotion, something often found amongst those who love Devon or Cornwall. The 'or' is deliberate: both counties can of course be admired, or enjoyed, and appreciated, but perhaps deeper feelings cannot easily be shared between them: Devon and Cornwall are firmly and decidedly different. There are, it must be added, also differences between each county — a glance at a geological map hints at some of these variations (in building materials as well as in landscape) — but the Tamar, for most of its length the boundary between the two counties, is an emotional, psychological, as well as physical, divide. The problems involved in writing about Devon and Cornwall in one volume are considerable; but the contrasts and — where they exist — the similarities are valuable evidence in any assessment and are a strong justification for such a method of working. As in other volumes in this series, the principle followed has been that places in the gazetteer are included solely for their interest, regardless of their 'importance' or familiarity.

Devon and Cornwall has seven pages of road maps, a geological map, three town plans (Exeter, Plymouth, Torquay), over 100 black-and-white half-tones, and four colour plates."

Francis of Assisi: A Portrait by E. M. [Edith Martha] Almedingen

Francis of Assisi: A Portrait by E. M. [Edith Martha] Almedingen lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

The Bodley Head, 1967, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Portrait to the frontispiece;

From the cover: "After the Apostles, St Francis of Assisi is the most familiar and the most widely revered of the saints. He answers a need which is as real today as it was in his own time. With a poet's intuition he understood that man cannot live by bread alone, that dreams and raptures are a part of his legitimate portion, and that the inevitable stresses of daily life should never be allowed to make him oblivious to beauty. Today more than ever we need to be reminded that calm can be found even in the heart of a storm.

Before turning her attention to the history of her native Russia, Miss Almedingen was a mediaeval scholar of distinction. She gives full value to the chivalric and poetic traditions which contributed so much to the saint's early formation, and discards much of the rather sickly accretion of legend which has grown up around him over the centuries, for which there is little if any authority. The result is a brief, straightforward account of Francis's life which perhaps puts him into a truer perspective than ever before. Certainly it will make him accessible to many readers who would shy away from a conventional work of hagiography."

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Plates; Portrait to the frontispiece;

From the cover: "IN THE second edition of The Lives of the Most Excellent Sculptors, Painters and Architects, which was seen through the press in Florence in 1568, Giorgio Vasari informed his fellow artists that of the large number of volumes printed of the first edition, eighteen years before, not one had been left on the booksellers' hands. A best seller when they were first published four hundred years ago, his biographies of the artists of the Renaissance have over the centuries maintained both their wide popular appeal and their immense historical value."

British Portrait Miniatures by Daphne Foskett

British Portrait Miniatures by Daphne Foskett lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Spring Books, 1968, Hardback in dust wrapper.

First in this edition. [First: 1963 by Methuen & Company Limited] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: "Ever since the sixteenth century, when the painting of miniatures (portraits in water colour, oils, or any other medium, and small enough to be held in the hand) was first introduced into Britain, collectors have prized the exquisite work of the best miniaturists. Today there is widespread interest in these portraits — which can be no larger than a thumbnail though they may be ten times that size — yet enthusiasts have often been hampered by lack of information: very few earlier books on the subject are still available and in recent times few writers have attempted a full treatment.

In this book Daphne Foskett, after vast research and a lifetime's study, has documented the entire subject from the reign of Henry VIII down to our own times. Miniatures served before the days of photography as a family portrait album and numerous artists have been commissioned to produce them. Mrs Foskett has taken care to supply information about lesser-known miniaturists as well as celebrated names like Nicholas Milliard, Isaac Oliver, Samuel Cooper, Thomas Flatman, Mary Beale, Richard Cosway, George Engle-heart and John Smart. This comprehensiveness is reflected in her wise choice of illustrations, among which are some fine but little known miniatures, including a number from her own notable collection.

Today the collecting of portrait miniatures is pursued more enthusiastically than ever. With the passing of time the finest of them have taken their place among art treasures — as a visit to many a saleroom will testify.

All lovers of portrait miniatures, and indeed the whole vast public with a general interest in beautiful things, will welcome this reappearance of Daphne Foskett's important book. More than a dozen miniatures are reproduced in fine colour and nearly 200 in monochrome. There is also a most valuable bibliography and a comprehensive index."

Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Heavily faded at the spine of the dust wrapper otherwise a very well presented copy.
