An important element in the story — the element which makes it moving as well as amusing and amazing — is Ezra's own discovery that he is not infallible. He can shrug off occasionally being check-mated by a potential brother-in-law, or outwitted by his wife; but to be wrong for years about a matter so vitally important as his attitude to Israel… What Lord Sterling does when he finally acknowledges this provides a memorable climax to a richly enjoyable novel.
