From the cover: "In Wine: Lore, Legends and Traditions Pamela Vandyke Price shares her delight in all the associations with that wonderful, mysterious and joyous subject — wine. No technicalities, no wine snobbery, no 'best buys'. This is a book in which even the non-drinker can revel!

At the outset, she explains some traditions governing service: what is meant by 'No heeltaps!' a 'brimmer', 'wassail' and how you should cope with a 'Loving Cup' as featured at City banquets. In Old Wives' Witterings she debunks the mystique of such notions as 'white wine with white meat', and warnings about not drinking Champagne and port at the same meal. Then, in Wine Appurtenances, there's the background to bottle shapes and sizes, a glance into tastevins and the famous chamberpot that gave a nickname to a crack British regiment. You'll be informed about the manipulation of a pipette, a venencia and a lopo — and learn how Victorian servants were prevented from taking a nip of the master's gin. Varieties of Vin and the subsequent chapter sort out the differences between a vin de cure and a vinum theologicum, tell you what you might expect from drinking Wendewein and exactly what's in a name. Champagne and its Niceties investigates bubbles and baths. The Wine Game points out the pitfalls of 'blind tasting' and some of the dirty work when a tasting is 'fixed'. Drink and Diplomacy delves into the politics behind the 'Loyal Toast', why Madeira became a patriotic tipple in North America and what resulted when the Merry Monarch and his court dined at Lincoln's Inn. In the next chapter you'll discover just how early women entered the wine trade and how the head of a great port establishment found her crinoline to be a literal lifesaver. Sharp comments on obtrusive odours that can waft into the tasting room follow and, finally the influence of dentistry on spitting is examined plus the record for expectoration.

Pamela Vandyke Price's unquenchable enthusiasm for wine is expressed in her own highly individual style. 'Wine,' she says, 'is meant to be fun'. Wine: Lore, Legends and Traditions is an effervescent book."
