The Guinness Guide to Game Fishing by William B. Currie

The Guinness Guide to Game Fishing by William B. Currie lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Guinness Publishing, 1990, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Diagrams; Tables;

From the cover: "Devotees of game fishing will know that the sport is compulsive, exciting and challenging. It draws the fisher into contact with trout, sea trout and salmon and their fascinating world. It takes the fisher into places of unforgettable beauty and character and the skills and subtleties involved mark the sport out as one in tune with man's experience of the wilderness. But in addition to this outward-bound side of game fishing, the sport is also deeply rooted in the emotions, capable of engendering the entire range of feelings, from ecstatic fulfilment to abject despondency. In The Guinness Book of Game Fishing, author Bill Currie draws on over fifty years' experience of game fishing to share his techniques, his thinking, and above all his enthusiasm for the sport which has fascinated him all his life.

This fully-revised version of The Guinness Guide to Game Fishing (1980) is divided into five sections. The first gives profiles of the main game fish and their world. The second concentrates on trout, both brown trout and rainbows, and provides a wide survey of where they are to be found and how they are best fished for. A section on the quest for sea trout follows, one of the author's special fields of interest and expertise.

In the fourth section, entitled "The Pursuit of Salmon" the emphasis is on understanding the fish and fishing in the wide range of conditions in which salmon are encountered, from spring to late autumn. This is an authoritative and comprehensive section, covering tackle, techniques and approaches, experiences and open discussion of this marvellous migratory fish. "Salmon returning to our rivers and lochs is one of our most cherished natural resources", the author says. "After a lifetime of witnessing the salmon returning to our rivers, and fishing for them all over Scotland, the miracle has never grown dull for me. Each sight or pull of a fish is just like the first time, heart-stoppingly exciting, primeval, essential".

In the final section, other game fish are discussed, principally grayling and char.

All the sections of the book are lavishly illustrated distilling the essence of this most mysterious and fascinating of sports.

The author's great enthusiasm and wide knowledge of his fishing shines through the text and infects the reader. He is one of the most evocative angling writers at work today and his game fishing books and articles have delighted many."

Prince Charles Breaking the Cycle: The Prince of Wales and the State of Britain by James Morton

Prince Charles Breaking the Cycle: The Prince of Wales and the State of Britain by James Morton lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Ebury Press, 1998, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Genealogical Tables;

From the cover: "Breaking the Cycle tells a story which has never been told before, describing the working life of Prince Charles. The range of his activities is so broad that no one has grasped the full extent of his impact on many areas of life in this country. The picture we get from the media involves an endless round of state functions and high-profile receptions, but this is only what lies on the surface. Underneath, a great deal is going on which is much more important, and much more interesting.

The Prince of Wales has an overall goal, which is nothing less than to put the 'great' back into Britain. In the early years he had a struggle to get going. His initiatives were often met with cynicism and hostility. But he persevered, and has now matured into a powerful focal point for many action groups, in areas like education, attacking the causes of unemployment, the rehabilitation of ex-offenders, furthering , the interests of the disabled, supporting the homeless, attacking the problems of racism and discrimination, and stimulating entrepreneurs to start new businesses. He has already achieved some outstanding successes in many fields.

In each chapter Prince Charles describes his involvement, recalling both what worked and what did not. Then there is an account of how the original ideas turned out in practice, with stories of individual people and how their lives have been affected by the Prince's activities. The book concludes by outlining his goals for the future, the fields in which he hopes to make further contributions, and his views on trends in our society.

For anyone interested in the future prosperity of Britain this book is a revelation, and a fitting tribute to an extraordinary individual on his 50th birthday."

The Oxford Book Of Birds by Bruce Campbell

The Oxford Book Of Birds by Bruce Campbell lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Oxford University Press, 1965, Hardback in dust wrapper.

2nd (revised) printing. [First Published: 1964] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Colour Drawings; Maps;

From the cover: "This is a companion volume to The Oxford Books Of Wild Flowers And Garden Flowers.

Its 96 coloured plates and accompanying text cover all the birds which have ever been recorded in Britain. Any bird which is seen at all regularly in any part of the British Isles is illustrated in full colour, together with several which are very rare. At the beginning of the book are notes on classification, and at the end are sections on special points of interest such as Flight, Anatomy, Behaviour and Breeding, and Migration.

The arrangement is the generally accepted one — according to order, family, and genus. In the plates the birds are shown in their natural setting — of mountain and moorland, sea cliff, mud flats, hedgerows, meadows, etc. In consequence each plate is in itself an attractive picture, apart from its value in identifying birds and recognising the variations in plumage shown between males, females, and juveniles and at different seasons of the year. Important identification points are emphasised in the text, which also describes each bird's general behaviour, habits, its song, its eggs and nest, and where and when it is most likely to be seen. With so full a coverage, this book deals with almost all birds likely to be seen in northern Europe as well as in Britain, and even with many American birds."

Married To Melanesia by Muriel Jones

Married To Melanesia by Muriel Jones lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

The Travel Book Club, 1976, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings; Maps;

From the cover: "We were married after three years at opposite ends of the world… We then, too rapidly for comfort, made off in a snowstorm for the South Seas… All this we imprudently did in our late forties. Thus Muriel Jones introduces her account of how she came to start her married life in the Solomon Islands, whose impact was traumatic, perhaps just because we were not in our first youth or innocent of other tropical experience.

St Peter's College was the only thing at Siota; there was no store and the only post office on the island was so difficult of access that I never visited it… we ourselves did most of the postal business quite informally at our end of the island. It is not surprising that even high-ranking visitors tended to arrive looking like ship-wrecked sailors. If one was ill enough to see a doctor one was, on the whole, too ill to be subjected to several hours of sun or rain in an open boat and a probable night en route. There is, too, the account of the old lady whose family, on her death, wanted to bury her in a coffin instead of the customary mat. Poor old lady; at the end of all these exertions, the coffin with her in it stood in church for the funeral, uneasily supported on two rickety small tables from our sitting room, mutely exhorting us to STOW AWAY FROM BOILERS.

Muriel Jones tells the unusual story of her five Melanesian years, of the impact of Christianity on a pagan people, of her husband's college and its move to another island, of the students, the islands and their animals and exotic vegetation, of the islanders (nine tenths of whom live in communities ranging from twenty to two hundred people) and of their changing way of life. Her story takes one about as far as it is possible to go from an urban civilisation and in telling it she reveals the resources of her own character."

Following On by Alec & Eric Bedser

Following On by Alec & Eric Bedser lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Evans Brothers, 1954, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: "The autobiography of the famous twins, begun in Our Cricket Story, continues in this book with vivid first-hand accounts of the historic 1950-1953 cricket seasons.

After describing the West Indian Tour of England in 1950, the twins tell of the Test Trials in which they found themselves in opposition to each other, Alec being in the England XI and Eric in The Rest; then begins a detailed description of the M. C. C. Tour of Australia and New Zealand, in which the inside story of both players and play is given, fairly and without bias, providing a new angle on one of the most controversial tours in cricket history.

This is followed by such chapters as: The Springbok Tour, The 1952 Season Against the Indians, County Cricket, Benefit Season, The Aussies at Trent Bridge, The Lord's Test, Old Trafford and Headingley and, of course, The Ashes — a graphic account of the England victory.

As in their previous book, the twins tell their story with directness and modesty characteristic of them, interlacing their narrative with humorous anecdotes and shrewd comment. Following On provides the cricket enthusiast with one of the most interesting and valuable books on modern cricket ever written, by two players who have helped to shape events in the past few years and who must certainly contribute largely to cricket of the future."

The Town Gardener's Companion by Felicity Bryan

The Town Gardener's Companion by Felicity Bryan lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Book Club Associates, 1981, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Diagrams;

From the cover: "Gardening is a pastime that is relaxing, rewarding — and money-saving. In towns and cities it can be a great challenge, too: space may be limited, gardens might face north or be overshadowed by high walls and the soil, perhaps, be very poor. The possibilities, though, are as various as the challenges, and in The Town Gardener's Companion Felicity Bryan draws together all her expertise and enthusiasm to suggest how to make the most of them.

A north-facing roof garden might seem a bleak prospect but can be transformed with silvery-leaved shade-loving shrubs. Why not grow vegetables in a window box if space is limited and you want to fill the garden with climbing roses? Or trail vines up a sunny back wall and fill your yard with sweet-smelling herbs? Whether you have an allotment or patio, a roof garden or window box, whether you want to grow prize-winning flowers or simply create a lovely spot to lounge in on a summer evening, you will find this book a mine of ideas and information.

With a small garden, ingenious planning is vital in order to maintain a year-round succession of flowers and foliage. Accordingly, The Town Gardener's Companion is divided into twelve sections, one for each month, which deal with all the seasonal jobs to be tackled and follow the progression of the gardening year. Chatto & Windus, 1964, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Drawings; Maps [1]; Number 1 in the series.

From the cover: "It is 1788. The Williver family, once prosperous but now farming a small-holding in Gloucestershire, send their thirteen-year-old son Tom to Cirencester market. Tom sells the goods he has been trusted with but is cheated of the money by a confidence trick. Ashamed to go home penniless, he takes a job with a crooked village innkeeper. There follow a series of adventures involving travelling glassblowers, Boulton and Watt's Soho Manufactory, a thieves' gang, and a Black Country canal and coal mine that eventually lead Tom to the capture of the man who had robbed him, and the threshold of a career. The life of the time forms a vivid background throughout the book, showing how people lived — what they ate, what they talked and wrote about — the wind of revolution blowing from France and the revolution at home that was changing men's lives through new inventions and machines.

This is the first of The Williver Chronicles: stories for the 12-14 age group, which will trace the history of the Williver family generation by generation within the setting of British and Commonwealth history from the eighteenth century onwards."

A Fish Caught in Time: The Search for the Coelacanth by Samantha Weinberg

A Fish Caught in Time: The Search for the Coelacanth by Samantha Weinberg lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

FOURTH ESTATE, 1999, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Drawings;

From the cover: "Just before Christmas in 1938, the young woman curator of a small South African museum spotted a strange-looking fish in a trawler's catch. It was five feet long, with steel-blue scales, luminescent eyes and remarkable limb-like fins, unlike those of any fish she had ever seen. Determined to preserve her unusual find, she searched for days for a way to save it, but ended up with only the skin and a few bones.

A charismatic amateur ichthyologist, J. L. B. Smith, saw a thumbnail sketch of the fish and was thunderstruck. He recognised it as a coelacanth (pronounced 'see-la-kanth'), a creature known from fossils dating back 400 million years and thought to have died out with the dinosaurs. With its extraordinary limbs, the coelacanth was believed to be the first fish to crawl from the sea and evolve into reptiles, mammals and eventually mankind. The discovery was immediately dubbed the 'greatest scientific find of the century'.

Smith devoted his life to the search for a complete specimen, a fourteen-year odyssey which culminated in a dramatic act of international piracy. As the fame of the coelacanth spread, so did rumours and obsessions. Nations fought over it, multimillion-dollar expeditions were launched, and submarines hand-built to find it. In 1998 the rumours and the truth came together in a gripping climax, which brought the coelacanth back into the international limelight.

A Fish Caught in Time is the entrancing story of the most rare and precious fish in the world — our own great uncle forty million times removed."

Khesh City is a place where nothing is forbidden — but it's also a democracy, of sorts, a democracy by assassination, policed by the Angels, the elite, state-sponsored killers who answer only to the Minister, their enigmatic master.

Taro lived with Malia, his Angel aunt, one of the privileged few, until a strange man bought his body for the night, then followed him home and murdered Malia in cold blood. Taro wants to find the killer who ruined his future, but he's struggling just to survive in the brutal world of the Undertow. Then an encounter with the Minister sets him on a new course, spying for the City; his target is a reclusive Angel called Nual.

Elarn Reen is a famous musician, sent to Khesh City as the unwilling agent of mankind's oldest enemy, the Sidhe. To save her own life, she must find and kill her ex-lover, a renegade Sidhe.

Though they come from different worlds, Taro and Elarn's fates are linked, their lives apparently forfeit to other people's schemes. In a hidden studio in an area of Rome where the Vatican liked to keep an eye on the city's prostitutes, an art expert from the Louvre is found dead in front of one of the most beautiful paintings that Nic Costa has ever seen an unknown Caravaggio masterpiece.

But before long tragedy will strike Nic far closer to home. The main suspect's identity is known, but he remains untouchable protected in his grand palazzo by a fleet of lawyers and a sinister cult known as the Ekstasists.

If Costa and his team can crack the reasons for the cult's existence, he may well stand a chance of nailing the double-killer. But the mystery will take him right back to Caravaggio himself and the reasons he had to flee Rome all those centuries before…"

From the cover: "If you can imagine a combination of Kathleen Hale's Orlando books, which have an innocence totally free from whimsy, Daisy Ashford's ingenuousness in the young visitors and Lowry's pictures of the industrial north, then Helen Bradley's painting has something of all these. '

With these words The Times greeted the publication of the now celebrated and Miss Carter wore pink. The lovely colours, the charm and activity of all the characters have won Helen Bradley, a 73-year-old grandmother of seven, a devoted following. Her paintings have sold for as much as £2,000 apiece, and novelist John Fowles called her bestselling book 'the best Christmas card of the decade'.

In Miss Carter Came With Us Helen Bradley depicts life in Lancashire throughout the whole year of 1908. 'My pictures are a love story of that gentle period', she says. The same loved characters of the previous book make their appearance — the three maiden aunts in their graceful muslin skirts, their friend Miss Carter (who wore pink), Willie Murgatroyd, the mill lad who was always fighting, Helen herself and her brother George, the dogs Gyp and Barney. Whether the scenes and their delightful, gay commentary depict shopping trips, a picnic party, holiday fun in Blackpool, Christmas Day, or even a suffragette meeting (where Miss Carter fainted), they add up to a beguiling look back at an Edwardian childhood that can only evoke nostalgic envy in the 1970s."

In the Beginning Said Great Aunt Jane by Helen Bradley

In the Beginning Said Great Aunt Jane by Helen Bradley lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Jonathan Cape, 1975, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Colour Drawings;

From the cover: "For Helen Bradley as a small child Tuesday afternoons up Springhead were very special, because Great-Aunt Jane could tell the most beautiful stories about God. 'In the beginning,' she would always start off, and on she would go with wonderful tales of how God had lit the stars with his matches to get rid of some of the blue-velvet void, how he polished the Sun with Brasso, and of the terrible rain that came when he went to Manchester and left the tap on.

The gay, graceful Edwardian magic of the Miss Carter books is here deftly coloured with Helen Bradley's childhood visions of the Almighty at his daily work — that exciting time when fish and chips were served for tea as a special treat on Judgment Day, when Adam and Eve could be found at Blackpool, and God lived up in the shed on the moors."

The Book of Samplers by Marguerite Fawdry & Deborah Brown

The Book of Samplers by Marguerite Fawdry & Deborah Brown lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Lutterworth Press, 1980, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs; Black & White Drawings; Colour Drawings; Patterns;

From the cover: "The sampler is one of the most charming traditional forms of embroidery, first made as a record of stitches and later as a picture to be framed and proudly displayed by its maker.

The first surviving specimen of tins form of folk art dates back to the 16th century with Jane Bostocke's sampler, now kept at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The Book of Samplers traces their history down to the present day when they have found renewed popularity among both antique collectors and those seeking relaxation in needlework. This interest in samplers is equally strong in America where the tradition of sampler-making, imported from England and Germany, blossomed during the 18th century in a distinctive and wholly indigenous fashion. In the 19th century, however, the art of the sampler went into something of a decline on both sides of the Atlantic: originality was replaced by slavish following of patterns with the effect often spoiled by the garish colours of aniline-dyed thread. In recent years the sampler has returned to favour for both its practical and decorative value. Professional embroiderers and teachers use it as a means for exploring stitches and fabric potentialities, but for most people, sampler-making is an enjoyable and rewarding pastime, an individual way to celebrate family events or simply to make a highly decorative picture.

This book, lavishly illustrated in colour and monochrome, is the first work to look at samplers both historically and practically. Each historical chapter is followed by a practical section explaining with all the necessary diagrams the stitches and motifs found on the samplers. A large modern sampler, specially designed and worked for the book is shown at the end, and is accompanied by full directions on how to work . it. But these instructions are merely guidelines: the secret behind the charm of old samplers was their individuality, their personal character. The practical sections of The Book of Samplers encourage the readers to recapture this individuality by showing them how to design their own samplers and providing a visual vocabulary of motifs and alphabets for them to use."

Victor Gollancz, 1984, Paperback.

First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Colour Drawings [123];

From the cover: "In a lifetime devoted to his art, Charles Tunnicliffe achieved mastery in several different fields, as an etcher and engraver, water-colourist and book illustrator specialising in natural history subjects. As a bird artist, Tunnicliffe stands supreme as the finest English practitioner since Thomas Bewick.

The present work comprises a selection of pages from Charles Tunnicliffe's many sketchbooks in which he recorded his observations of birds in the field. The earliest sketch included in this book dates from 1934, and the latest from 1962. In all, 123 sketches have been selected from seventeen sketchbooks.

The work is divided into five separate sections: Seabirds; Waders; Geese, Ducks and Swans; Birds of Prey and Miscellaneous Birds.

Landscapes of Scotland by Anon.

Landscapes of Scotland by Anon. lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Lomond Books, 1988, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs;

From the cover: "The wind whips along the lonely glen, bringing flurries of snow down from the brooding peaks and scattering the flakes across the heather to cover the graves of the ancient clan dead and bank against the herdsman's shelter. Such is the traditional view of the Scottish landscape, and to a large measure it is true, but as the glorious compilation of photographs in this book shows, there is far more to the northern land than tradition declares. There are the tranquil lowlands, where the rumble of farm machinery echoes across the soft landscape of fields and woodlands. Out to the west, like sentinels in the rolling ocean, rise the windswept, heathered islands which have become the subject of so many haunting airs and poems. Gaunt castles rise above the dark, still waters of the lochs which cast their all-pervading magic over the country. But it is still the romantic highlands which draw the imagination and tug at the heartstrings of Scots everywhere."

My Dad Was Nearly James Bond by Des Bishop

My Dad Was Nearly James Bond by Des Bishop lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Penguin [Dublin, Ireland], 2011, Paperback.

First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: "For years acclaimed comedian Des Bishop wanted to write a show about his father. Mike Bishop was a model and actor who gave up that life to become a hard-working man of the suburbs — a good husband, a caring father, a responsible citizen. Still, he sometimes talked wistfully about the glamorous life he might have had.

All that changed after Mike was diagnosed with terminal cancer in late 2009. His regrets about his fantasy other life crumbled. He cherished his family and they came together to surround him with love, laughter, tears and talk. Lots of talk. The insights that emerged during Mike Bishop's illness became the show Des always wanted to stage. He and his father collaborated on My Dad Was Nearly James Bond — a hilarious, outrageous and moving celebration of what Des calls 'the heroics of fatherhood'. The show has attracted rave reviews and sell-out audiences around the world.

Mike Bishop died in February 2011. Now Des has written a memoir inspired by the stage show, by the startling discoveries he made about his father's background before he died, and by his own realization of what it means to finally grow up. The book is a funny, wise and unforgettable story of a father, a son and what really matters."

From the cover: "Considering Prose has been devised by two experienced teachers for those doing advanced (post O-level) work in English literature. It deals in depth with an area which, though vital for examination success, is often neglected: criticism of prose is in many ways a separate area from criticism of verse and poses its own special difficulties for students up to and including undergraduate level. The Lady's Realm; a Selection from the Monthly Issues: November 1904 to April 1905 by Lady Georgina Coleridge

The Lady's Realm; a Selection from the Monthly Issues: November 1904 to April 1905 by Lady Georgina Coleridge lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Arrow [London, England], 1972, Paperback.

First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: "The lady's realm was a monthly magazine, first established in Queen Victoria's reign. This selection is made up from the six issues covering the months November 1904 to April 1905. A period during which the magazine celebrated its one hundredth issue (and also a period that saw the opening — fully reported in the theatre notes — of a new play by James Barrie: Peter Pan).

All the regular features are included, together with the great majority of the special articles. All the articles are reproduced in full. The only omission is that of the fiction. Each issue always included one or two complete stories, as well as an instalment of a serial.

Lithographic production gives facsimile reproduction of the original pages. The style as well as the content of an Edwardian ladies' magazine together illustrate how much has changed in the last sixty-eight years — and maybe how much has stayed the same."

Back to Basics: Arthur Daley's Anatomy of Britain by Andrew Nickolds lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Heinemann, 1994, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the flap: "Arthur Daley, national institution, super patriot and Olympic gold medallist in Ducking and Diving, takes a long, hard look at the state of the nation and asks: What is Occurring? Her Majesty the Queen forced to open up the hallowed portals of Buck House and become a Pentax-dodger; Her Majesty Mrs Thatcher roaming the seas singing for her supper, while the fate of the country is left in the hands of a Nerd-Do-Well and a Chancellor who smokes cigarillos; and even Her Holiness Lady Porter treated like some common shoplifter at Tesco! Fortunately Arthur is on hand. His brief, if you'll pardon the expression? To hold out a beacon of light to hapless Brits lost in a mailroom of uncertainty, and to lead them back to the level playing field on top of the high moral ground. To bring the country back to basics on such burning topics as the Monarchy, Sport, Education, the Citizens' Charter (the Arthur-ised Version), Europe, the Arts and the vexed question of Sunday Trading. In a dry roast nutshell, Daley's Anatomy is a complete company report on Great Britain plc that makes the Doomsday Book look like a takeaway menu from the Fulham Golden Palace."

Arthur Baker [London, England], 1990, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: "Jimmy Greaves, author, has scored again with a gripping sequel to his best-selling autobiography, This One's On Me. In this book Greavsie gives a fascinating insight into the trials and tribulations, the triumphs and disasters following his recovery from the curse of alcoholism.

Told with his inimitable humour and no-holds-barred frankness, Jimmy peppers It's A Funny Old Life with a parade of amusing anecdotes and telling observations. Greavsie writes with remarkable openness about his new life in television, and about having to confront problems that could easily have driven him back to the booze. He reveals the difficulties that still beset him, introduces the family he kept together despite his drink nightmare, takes shots at the people he accuses of ruining British football, and he gives an A to Z assessment of television that is both irreverent and hilarious. Included also is a 'factfile' that records the highlights of Jimmy's amazing footballing career.

'So far,' writes Greavsie, 'the second half of my life has been even more hectic than the first. ' Find out why by reading It's A Funny Old Life."

A Century in Photographs: Gardening 1900-2000 by Mark Griffiths

A Century in Photographs: Gardening 1900-2000 by Mark Griffiths lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Times Books, 2000, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Tables;

From the cover: "A Century in Photographs: Gardening combines two of this century's best loved passions — gardening and photography. In a remarkable pictorial survey, Mark Griffiths tells the story of gardening in the 20th century, drawing on over two hundred black and white arid colour photographs.

Chosen for their charm, aesthetic, curiosity and historical value, the photographs depict not only garden history, but social history in the making — snapshots, for example, of gardens in the Second World War, when every spare yard of soil (castle moats, royal parks and polo grounds included) was devoted to vegetable production. Some are hauntingly beautiful, others remarkably rare — all find their way into this unique record of a century's enthusiasm for ill is much-loved occupation.

Arranged chronologically, the photographs are accompanied by Mark Griffiths text, which places each in its historical context and highlights its more unusual features. Many of the images have been selected from the Hulton Getty Picture Collection and the archives of The Times — two of the world's greatest photographic resources. As news photographs, they present the unfolding story of gardens with striking freshness and immediacy. To their drama is added the unparalleled depth of the Royal Horticultural Society's own collections. These include a wealth of intimate photographs taken by gifted amateurs and professionals of horticultural events and the making of some of the century s finest gardens.

A Century in Photographs: Gardening is the story of gardening's triumph at the century's end as the most popular and multi-faceted pastime of all."

The Longest Day: The D-Day Story, June 6th, 1944 by Cornelius Ryan

The Longest Day: The D-Day Story, June 6th, 1944 by Cornelius Ryan lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

New Orchard, 1994, Hardback in dust wrapper.

First in this edition. [First: Victor Gollancz, 1960] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Maps to the endpapers and blanks;

From the cover: "6 June, 1944. 156,000 troops from 12 different countries, 11,000 aircraft, 7,000 naval vessels, 24 hours. D-Day — the beginning of the Allied invasion of Hitler's formidable 'Fortress Europe' — was the largest amphibious invasion in history.

There has never been a battle like it, before or since. But beyond the statistics and over sixty years on, what is it about the events of D-Day that remain so compelling? The courage of the men who fought and died on the beaches of France? The sheer boldness of the invasion plan? Or the fact that this, Rommel's 'longest day', heralded the beginning of the end of World War II. One of the defining battles of the war, D-Day is scored into the imagination as the moment when the darkness of the Third Reich began to be swept away.

This is the story of D-Day, told through the voices of over 1,000 survivors — from high-ranking Allied and German officers, to the paratroopers who landed in Normandy before dawn, the infantry who struggled ashore and the German troops who defended the coast.

Cornelius Ryan captures the horror and the glory of D-Day, relating in emotive and compelling detail the years of inspired tactical planning that led up to the invasion, its epic implementation and every stroke of luck and individual act of heroism that would later define the battle. In the words of its author, The Longest Day is a story not of war, but of the courage of man."

Dick Francis: A Racing Life by Graham Lord

Dick Francis: A Racing Life by Graham Lord lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Little, Brown & Co., 1999, Hardback in dust wrapper.

Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs;

From the cover: "For nearly forty years now a new Dick Francis horseracing thriller has been published every autumn to the delight of millions of fans all over the world. His books have sold sixty million copies in thirty-five languages and have won several awards and been praised lavishly by admirers as varied as Kingsley Amis, Philip Larkin and the Queen Mother .

So how does Francis do it, this legendary ex-champion jockey who hated school and left it at fifteen without any qualifications, yet whose books shoot straight to the top of the bestseller list each Christmas? He does it with an immense amount of help from his amazing wife, Mary, of whom he has often said that he wishes she would let him put her name as co-author on the covers of the books. Dick and Mary Francis have created a spectacularly successful literary partnership, and the story of the Dick Francis books is the story of them both.

Graham Lord has known the Francises for nearly thirty years. In this revealing double biography he tells not only the riveting tale of Dick's remarkable life — the horsey Welsh childhood, the triumphs as champion jump-jockey, the 1956 Grand National tragedy when he so nearly won the race on Devon Loch — he also tells the intriguing secret story of Dick's astonishing wife. Mary and Dick fell in love at first sight, at a cousin's wedding, and for more than fifty years they have been inseparable, creating not only a triumphant working partnership but also an idyllically close marriage, with two sons, that was the envy of all who knew them.

Graham Lord's warm, affectionate, yet sharp and perceptive biography of Dick and Mary Francis is romantic, inspiring and deeply moving — and one of the great love stories of our time."

Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Gently faded at the spine of the dust wrapper. Edges of the text block tanned.

My Word Is My Bond: The Autobiography by Roger Moore with Gareth Owen

My Word Is My Bond: The Autobiography by Roger Moore with Gareth Owen lands on the |> SALE <| shelves in my shop.

Michael O'Mara, 2008, Hardback in dust wrapper.

2nd printing. [First Published: 2008] Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photographs;

From the cover: "Dashing, handsome and every inch the archetypal English gentleman, Roger Moore has starred in some of the most unforgettable films and celebrated television series of the last half century.

Who could forget the smooth-talking adventurer Simon Templar in The Saint? Or that rakish playboy Lord Brett Sinclair from The Persuaders Roger Moore reigns supreme as the most debonair 007 and reprised the role of James Bond over seven blockbusting films, which are shown time after time all over the world. His whole persona exudes style, good living and sophistication; his millions of fans idolize him; but he has never written his autobiography — until now.

For the first time he will share his recollections of playing some of the world's most famous roles — and playing with some of the world's most legendary stars. He talks of his family life, with memories of his London childhood and his miserable evacuation at the onset of the Second World War, as well as the happy and turbulent times of later years. He tells of his marriages and children and how he found love and contentment with his beautiful wife, Kristma.

He reminisces about his early days as a jobbing actor, and his first break, when he joined MGM studios towards the very end of the contract system, and played alongside screen legends such as Elizabeth Taylor, Van Johnson, Lana Turner, Debbie Reynolds, Glenn Ford, David Niven and many others. Many films and television roles followed, before the role of James Bond was offered to him, and Roger Moore talks frankly about the films themselves and the producers, directors and the casts with whom he worked.

Punctuated throughout with personal anecdotes about such luminaries as Noel Coward, Gary Grant, Richard Harris, Stewart Granger, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Gregory Peck, Richard Burton, Michael Caine and Sean Connery, and memories from the heyday of Hollywood, this frank, funny and disarmingly charming autobiography is as attractive and diverting as the man himself."
