Northumberland's Prehistoric Rock Carvings: A Mystery Explained by Stan Beckensall

Northumberland's Prehistoric Rock Carvings: A Mystery Explained by Stan Beckensall hits the £1 shelf in my shop.

Pendulum Publications, 1983, Paperback.

First in this, paperback, edition. Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Black & White Plates; Diagrams; Maps; Tables;

From the cover: "This book is the most detailed record ever made of Northumberland's fascinating prehistoric rock-carvings.

Stan Beckensall has worked for years in his spare time following up discoveries that people have made since the 1820s, and has excavated many new sites that have added significantly to our knowledge of the variety of symbols, the way they were made, and their undoubted link with religion.

This book puts the whole study into perspective: Part 1 traces the history of the study, relates the finds to a wider context that is now attracting the attention of experts all over the world, offers a typology, and through drawings, maps, photographs and rubbings, presents the reader with a first-class introduction to the subject.

The second part lists every'single site, and through a regional survey offers to expert and casual sightseer alike a picture of each carving and a guide to its whereabouts. The book is full of illustrations and easy to follow."

Good. A pleasant enough reading copy. Gently rubbed at the edges of the spine and wrappers. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Previous owners' inscription to the reverse of the upper wrapper. Last few leaves damp-wrinkled at the top corner. A working copy.

237 pages. 9¾" x 6¾".

This book will be listed, sooner or later, for £6.50 on my delightful website... (added to my Archaeology category.) but get 50% off buying from my blog... below...
