Walking the Dales by Mike Harding hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
Michael Joseph, 1986, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Colour Photographs; Maps;
From the cover: "When Mike Harding was fourteen, he set off with a friend for a bicycling holiday 'in a sort of northerly direction out of Manchester'. During the next fortnight, he fell under the spell of the Yorkshire Dales and its dazzling scenery.
Walking the Dales is not a guide book. It's first and last a book about Mike Harding's love for the high fells and the rivered valleys, and the marvellous Dales people. Since walking is, to Mike, the best way of getting to know anywhere, this is the story of many different walks he has made and photographed over the last fifteen years.
All the famous names are there Pen-y-ghent, Great Shunner Fell and Swaledale; but also a number of walks that are less well known Baugh Fell and Garsdale, Ease Gill and Mallerstang. There is a little history, conversations with people he meets on the way and any number of quirky Hardingesque asides. The text is complemented by his own superb photographs angry skies over Dentdale, the gypsies on their way to Appleby Fair, a derelict mine shaft or a lonely church. This is a book for everyone who loves the British countryside in all her moods."

The Royal Family: A Year by Year Chronicle of the House of Windsor by Edited by Duncan Hill, Alison Gauntlett, Sarah Rickayzen & Gareth Thomas
The Royal Family: A Year by Year Chronicle of the House of Windsor by Edited by Duncan Hill, Alison Gauntlett, Sarah Rickayzen & Gareth Thomas hits the £1 shelf in my shop.
Parragon, 2007, Hardback in dust wrapper.
Illustrated by way of: Black & White Photographs; Colour Photograhs; Illustrated endpapers and blanks;
From the cover: "During the twentieth century, the House of Windsor has had its share of difficulties the abdication crisis of 1936, the very public break-up of the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales and the death of Diana in 1997 were all dark days for the monarchy. But there has also been much to celebrate the birth of seven grandchildren to the Queen; the celebration of her Silver and Golden Wedding Anniversaries with the Duke of Edinburgh; and most recently the Queen's Golden Jubilee of 2002.
The Royal Family has never before been so accessible: modern technology has allowed the public to follow the lives of the Queen and her family much more closely. Media and public fascination has grown to unprecedented levels over the last three decades; the House of Windsor has had to adapt to being in the public gaze, and accept that the days of unquestioning reverence are long gone. Despite this, the Royal Family is held in high regard by Britons and throughout the world, acting as a focus for national identity, unity and pride, and giving an enduring sense of stability and continuity to many."
